Job Title: Electrical Engineer - Brushless DC Motor Control (Part-Time, Flexible)Job Description
This role supports the development of a next-generation surgical power tool by providing expert system-level electrical engineering focused on brushless DC motor controller integration and debugging. You will troubleshoot and optimize how the motor, controller, battery, firmware, and trigger systems work together, ensuring reliable performance of a complex electromechanical product. This is a part-time, flexible opportunity that can complement other professional commitments, with remote work as the norm and periodic onsite visits at key development stages.
Responsibilities
Provide system-level electrical engineering support for motor-driven products, with a focus on brushless DC motor controller systems.
Debug and resolve issues related to motor controllers, power electronics, and battery protection systems.
Diagnose and address firmware-hardware interaction issues that affect system performance and reliability.
Investigate and resolve thermal, current, and performance-related failures across the electrical system.
Analyze how the motor, controller board, firmware, battery, and trigger interface function together as a complete system and recommend improvements.
Support testing, integration, and qualification activities for new product development, including participation in structured test and validation efforts.
Review controller boards and layouts to identify potential electrical or current-handling limitations, while working with existing PCB designs rather than owning PCB design.
Collaborate closely with internal mechanical engineers to ensure cohesive electro-mechanical integration.
Work with offshore debug teams and external development partners to troubleshoot and resolve complex system-level issues.
Document findings, share clear technical insights, and contribute to iterative improvements in the product design and integration process.
Essential Skills
Proven experience as an electrical engineer with strong, hands-on expertise in brushless DC motor controller systems.
Background in system-level electrical engineering, focusing on how components interact as a complete system rather than only on individual component design.
Demonstrated experience debugging electromechanical systems that involve motor controllers, battery-powered devices, and embedded control systems.
Ability to diagnose both hardware and firmware-related issues in complex electrical systems.
Comfort working with externally designed PCBs and firmware, including reviewing layouts and identifying potential electrical limitations.
Experience with power electronics and high-current systems, including power distribution and protection considerations.
Strong electrical debugging skills, including methodical problem-solving and root-cause analysis in electro-mechanical environments.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience working with power tools, surgical tools, or similar electromechanical products.
Familiarity with microcontrollers such as Texas Instruments platforms or comparable embedded control solutions.
Broad electrical-mechanical engineering experience that extends beyond motor systems alone.
Experience working in fast-paced product development or testing environments with evolving requirements.
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional and geographically distributed teams.
Comfort operating as a high-impact technical expert in a flexible, part-time capacity.
Work Environment
The role offers a highly flexible schedule, with workload varying week to week based on project needs and potentially as minimal as a few hours per week. There is potential for longer-term involvement as you support future products and ongoing development efforts. The position supports remote work as the primary mode of engagement, with periodic travel to onsite locations at key stages of development; travel expenses are covered as needed. You will work within a fast-paced product development environment focused on advanced surgical power tools, collaborating with internal mechanical engineers, offshore debug teams, and external development partners. The work centers on modern electromechanical systems, brushless DC motor controllers, power electronics, battery-powered devices, and embedded control technologies, in a setting that emphasizes technical depth, practical problem-solving, and minimal corporate bureaucracy.
