Job Title: Electrical Systems EngineerJob Description
The Electrical Systems Engineer designs and delivers robust electrical machine control systems that meet demanding performance, reliability, and compliance requirements. This role translates business and product requirements into well-architected electrical solutions, leads proofs-of-concept to de-risk development, and partners closely with cross-functional teams to execute complex engineering projects from concept through implementation. The engineer applies systems engineering principles, industry standards, and structured problem-solving methods to create innovative, maintainable, and scalable electrical architectures.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with product managers and cross-functional stakeholders to translate business and product requirements into well-designed, implemented, and thoroughly documented electrical system solutions.
Establish functional requirements and performance targets for electrical machine systems, ensuring alignment with overall product objectives.
Develop new ideas and hypotheses, and conduct rapid proofs-of-concept (POCs) to validate concepts, reduce technical risk, and guide development direction.
Work as part of a cross-functional engineering team to plan and execute complex projects, coordinating closely with Mechanical, Hardware, Systems, Software, Production, and Supply Chain teams.
Lead and actively participate in design reviews, presenting concepts, design decisions, risks, and mitigation plans to internal and external stakeholders.
Design machine control systems to solve challenging application problems, with a strong focus on clear requirements, well-defined interfaces, and reuse and maintainability of solutions.
Collaborate with internal teams, external vendors, and design services partners to implement, integrate, and maintain electrical solutions across new and legacy systems.
Apply a deep understanding of electrical system elements and development processes, including wiring harnesses, printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), embedded software, and regulatory testing such as UL, IEC, EMC, ESD, and EFT.
Ensure designs comply with applicable industry standards and regulatory requirements, and maintain documentation that demonstrates compliance.
Evaluate design risk using tools such as Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and other structured risk assessment methods.
Partner with mechanical design teams to generate system-level design innovations that deliver tangible value and improved performance for customers.
Participate in electrical design activities with attention to cost, schedule, and quality metrics, and contribute to project planning and tracking.
Engage in structured problem-solving activities, including root cause analysis, to resolve technical issues and improve system robustness.
Decompose, develop, author, and verify requirements, and manage them using appropriate requirements management tools and interface control documentation.
Break complicated projects into clear development milestones and proof-of-concept efforts to systematically de-risk technical challenges.
Use task management and defect tracking tools, such as Jira, to plan work, track progress, and manage issues throughout the development lifecycle.
Present complex technical information, design rationales, and trade-offs in a clear and accessible manner to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree (BS) in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or Computer Engineering.
At least 3 years of experience in electrical systems or related engineering roles.
Proven track record in electrical architecture design and implementation in a technical leadership capacity.
Hands-on experience building and deploying control solutions that incorporate both new and legacy systems.
Strong understanding of electrical systems integration, including harnessing, connectors, cable routing, mechanical protection such as sleeving, and electrical protection such as fuses and circuit breakers.
Experience participating in electrical design activities with awareness of cost and schedule metrics.
Experience working on cross-functional teams, including Mechanical, Hardware, Systems, Software, Production, and Supply Chain stakeholders.
Experience in requirements decomposition, development, authoring, and verification, including use of requirements management tools and interface control documentation.
Experience de-risking complex projects by defining development milestones and executing proof-of-concept activities.
Experience with task management and defect tracking tools, including Jira.
Ability to present complex technical information clearly and effectively to internal and external stakeholders.
Creative and dynamic team player with the ability to lead small cross-functional groups.
Strong multi-tasking ability, with comfort managing multiple projects simultaneously.
Demonstrated problem-solving skills and root cause analysis capabilities.
Ability to adapt and drive progress when design aspects are not fully defined or evolve over time.
Core technical foundation in systems design, systems engineering, hardware, and electrical engineering.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Prior experience in electric vehicle electrical system design is highly desirable.
Experience in physical systems modeling, analysis, and simulation using tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, MathCad, or PSpice.
Expertise in control system modeling, design, and verification using tools such as MATLAB and Simulink.
Experience with communication interfaces and networks, including CAN, RS-232, Ethernet, and USB.
Familiarity with mechanical design software basic functionality, such as SolidWorks.
Background in power electronics, power systems, and closed-loop control systems is preferred.
Experience participating in technical teams that use structured problem-solving methodologies.
Comfort collaborating with vendors and external design services teams on implementation and maintenance of solutions.
Work Environment
The Electrical Systems Engineer works in a collaborative, cross-functional engineering environment that emphasizes innovation, structured problem-solving, and continuous improvement. The role involves close interaction with mechanical, hardware, systems, software, production, and supply chain teams, as well as external vendors and design partners. Typical work includes a mix of office-based design and analysis, participation in design reviews and technical discussions, and hands-on engagement with electrical systems, harnesses, PCBAs, and control hardware during integration and testing. The environment makes extensive use of modern engineering tools such as requirements management systems, task and defect tracking platforms like Jira, and modeling and simulation tools including MATLAB, Simulink, and related applications. The culture values clear communication, documentation, and collaboration, and supports engineers in leading small cross-functional groups and contributing to complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
