Job Title: Accountant III (Construction)
Job Description:
This role is a senior staff-level construction accounting position supporting a growing, profitable construction contractor in the Baltimore area. You will handle core accounting functions such as cash management, job costing, billing, and subledger oversight while working closely with senior leadership in a small, collaborative back-office team. The position is designed for an experienced construction accounting professional who is ready to take on significant responsibility in a fast-paced, project-driven environment and who is interested in long-term growth and succession opportunities as the company expands.
Responsibilities:
Perform daily bank reconciliations and monitor the company's cash position, tracking trends and ensuring timely posting of wires and deposits.
Oversee and reconcile all accounting subledgers, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Billing, and Payroll, to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
Support and maintain job costing processes, including work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and change order tracking, ensuring accurate project financial reporting.
Collaborate closely with project managers and estimators to verify financial accuracy related to job costs, WIP, and change orders.
Participate in month-end close activities, including preparing and posting journal entries, completing account reconciliations, and performing variance analysis.
Provide backup coverage for transactional accounting functions such as Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll during vacations and peak workload periods.
Assist leadership in expanding and refining system workflows, internal controls, and reporting capabilities to support ongoing growth initiatives.
Maintain organized and accurate electronic and paper file management systems to support audits, reporting, and internal reviews.
Leverage advanced Microsoft Excel skills to analyze data, prepare schedules, and support financial reporting and decision-making.
Adapt quickly to the company's accounting software and participate in system enhancements and process improvements as needed.
Essential Skills:
3-5+ years of accounting experience in construction, heavy civil, or other project-based environments in a non-entry-level capacity.
Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles, including job costing, WIP schedules, billing processes, and change orders.
Proficiency in general ledger accounting and account reconciliation.
Hands-on experience with financial reporting and month-end close processes, including journal entries and variance analysis.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis.
Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt quickly to new accounting software platforms.
Excellent organizational skills with strong electronic and paper file management capabilities.
High attention to detail and accuracy in reconciliations, reporting, and documentation.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, project-driven environment and manage multiple priorities.
Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with leadership, project managers, estimators, and accounting staff.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with Vista by Viewpoint or similar construction ERP systems is a significant plus.
Hands-on experience managing multiple subledgers and implementing internal controls in a construction setting.
Experience with cash management, including daily bank reconciliations and monitoring cash position.
Exposure to WIP reporting, change order tracking, and job costing in a construction environment.
Growth-oriented mindset with an interest in professional development and long-term career advancement within the organization.
Comfort working in a lean accounting team and providing backup support across AP, AR, and Payroll functions.
Work Environment:
This is a 100% on-site role based in the Baltimore, MD area, operating on standard business hours that typically start around 7:00 AM. You can expect extended hours, often 9-10 hour days, during month-end close periods and other peak times. The office is a small, collaborative environment of approximately 12-15 people, providing direct access to leadership and fostering close teamwork. You will report to the CFO and work closely with a lean accounting team that includes Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll staff. The setting is professional, team-oriented, and project-driven, with a culture that supports growth, visibility, and advancement as the company continues to expand.
