Job Title: Mechanical Designer / Mechanical DrafterJob Description
The Mechanical Designer / Mechanical Drafter prepares accurate production and assembly drawings using SolidWorks and related CAD tools, based on models created by equipment designers and engineers. The role involves translating design concepts into clear, manufacturable drawings, maintaining accurate documentation and bills of material, and collaborating closely with engineering, manufacturing, and procurement teams. While the primary focus is drafting, you will also contribute to modeling and design activities and support engineering change processes.
Responsibilities
Create detailed production and assembly drawings in SolidWorks based on models and direction from equipment designers and engineers.
Perform some 3D modeling and mechanical design work while following established concepts, standards, and best practices.
Use SolidWorks Vault or PDM systems to manage and maintain CAD files, revisions, and drawing versions.
Develop and maintain accurate bills of material (BOM) within CAD and the ERP system to support manufacturing and procurement.
Support and process engineering change orders, ensuring drawings, models, and documentation stay current and consistent.
Collaborate with engineers, designers, and manufacturing staff to clarify design intent and resolve technical questions.
Coordinate with procurement to identify and specify the equipment, components, and materials required for designed products.
Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and aligned with production capabilities.
Visit the production floor to review in-process and completed products, verify that builds match drawings, and support issue resolution.
Communicate clearly with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth handoff from design to production and on-time project completion.
Use AutoCAD and other CAD tools as needed to support legacy drawings or specific project requirements.
Follow internal drafting and documentation standards to produce clear, consistent, and professional engineering drawings.
Contribute to continuous improvement of drafting, documentation, and design processes.
Support company goals and project milestones that contribute to eligibility for the annual bonus structure.
Essential Skills
Proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D modeling and mechanical drafting.
Experience with mechanical design principles and practices.
Understanding of manufacturing processes and how they influence design and drafting.
Ability to create and interpret detailed production and assembly drawings.
Experience working with SolidWorks Vault or other PDM systems for CAD data management.
Ability to develop and maintain accurate bills of material (BOM).
Familiarity with ERP systems and how engineering data integrates with operations.
Experience processing or supporting engineering change orders.
Strong general CAD skills, including experience with tools such as AutoCAD.
Effective written and verbal communication skills for collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, and procurement teams.
For Designer 2: At least 2 years of experience using SolidWorks and at least 1 year of experience in a manufacturing environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Associate degree in drafting and design or a mechanical engineering degree.
For Designer 1: Open to new graduates with a drafting and design degree or a four-year mechanical engineering degree.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a cross-functional engineering and manufacturing team.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in drawings and documentation.
Organizational skills to manage multiple projects, revisions, and deadlines.
Problem-solving skills to support design-for-manufacturing and resolve issues identified on the production floor.
Work Environment
The role is primarily office-based, working at a computer to design and draft in SolidWorks and related CAD tools. You will collaborate closely with engineers and other technical staff in a professional engineering environment and regularly coordinate with procurement to define equipment and material needs. The position also requires periodic visits to the production floor to observe products during fabrication and assembly, verify that builds align with drawings, and support issue resolution with shop personnel. Work is performed using SolidWorks, SolidWorks Vault or PDM, ERP systems, and occasionally AutoCAD. The environment combines a typical office setting with time spent in a manufacturing shop, offering direct visibility into how designs move from concept to completed product. An annual company bonus structure may be available when the organization achieves specific goals or milestones.
