Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Description
This Mechanical Design Engineer role focuses on leading HVAC design for regulated healthcare facilities, including clinics, outpatient centers, and institutional healthcare projects. The position calls for a seasoned MEP consulting professional who can independently drive mechanical design quality, ensure regulatory compliance, and collaborate closely with architects and facility stakeholders. You will leverage your deep understanding of healthcare systems, codes, and construction administration to deliver reliable, efficient, and compliant building systems while enjoying a high degree of autonomy and visible impact on project outcomes.
Responsibilities
Lead HVAC design for regulated healthcare spaces, including clinics, outpatient facilities, and institutional healthcare projects.
Develop mechanical engineering designs that address infection control, redundancy, system reliability, ventilation, pressurization, and controls in healthcare environments.
Coordinate closely with architects, facility stakeholders, and other project team members to integrate mechanical systems seamlessly into overall building design.
Anticipate compliance risks related to HCAI / OSHPD, California Mechanical Code, California Energy Code (Title 24), and CALGreen requirements to reduce redesigns and delays.
Apply working knowledge of plumbing design and plumbing coordination to support integrated MEP solutions.
Use CAD and Revit tools to produce and coordinate mechanical and plumbing design documents.
Provide strong construction administration support, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and participating in field coordination and issue resolution.
Support and guide central plant design and operations considerations for healthcare facilities.
Engage directly with clients, demonstrating strong communication and professional presence in meetings and project discussions.
Manage projects and tasks effectively, balancing technical quality, schedule, and coordination with the broader project team.
Essential Skills
10-15+ years of MEP consulting experience, with a focus on mechanical engineering.
Strong project portfolio in healthcare, including clinics, outpatient facilities, and institutional healthcare projects.
Proven ability to lead HVAC design for regulated healthcare spaces.
Deep understanding of infection control considerations in healthcare mechanical systems.
Expertise in redundancy and system reliability for critical healthcare environments.
Strong knowledge of healthcare ventilation, pressurization, and controls.
Experience working within HCAI / OSHPD review environments.
Professional Engineer (PE) license, with California licensure preferred.
Proficiency in mechanical engineering design, HVAC design, plumbing design, and CAD design.
Working knowledge of plumbing coordination and plumbing codes.
Thorough understanding of California Mechanical Code (CMC).
Thorough understanding of California Energy Code (Title 24).
Knowledge of CALGreen requirements.
Strong construction administration skills, including RFI responses, submittal reviews, and field coordination and issue resolution.
Experience with Revit for mechanical and plumbing design and coordination.
Demonstrated project management capabilities in a consulting engineering environment.
Strong communication skills and professional client presence.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Healthcare systems specialization, with a focus on regulated healthcare environments.
Experience with central plant systems in healthcare or similarly complex facilities.
Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with architects, facility stakeholders, and project teams.
Comfort working with a high degree of ownership and autonomy.
Ability to operate effectively in a small, relationship-driven engineering firm.
Commitment to quality, attention to detail, and doing work correctly rather than rushing to completion.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sacramento, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $135000.00 - $155000.00/hr.
