For more information on the Department of Justice and the United States Attorney's Offices, visit http://www.justice.gov/careers/careers.html Responsibilities The United States Attorney's Office, Middle District of Florida (MDFL), is seeking an experienced attorney interested in working in our Appellate Division, Post-Conviction Section. The MDFL is headquartered in Tampa and has branch offices in Orlando, Jacksonville, Fort Myers and Ocala. This position can be filled in any of our 5 offices. The person hired for this position will represent the United States in a variety of post-conviction litigation, including addressing defendants' motions seeking relief from their convictions or sentences under 28 U.S.C. §§ 2241 and 2255 and 18 U.S.C. § 3582. The position will require some appearances in United States District Court and also may entail practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. http://www.justice.gov/usao-mdfl. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) by their entry on duty date. Law school graduates and current law students taking a July 2026 bar examination may be considered, subject to the foregoing requirements. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: Applicants should have excellent academic credentials and some litigation experience, preferably at least three years. Applicants also should be computer literate, possess superior oral and written communication skills, have strong character and excellent interpersonal skills, have the capacity to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment, and have a strong commitment to public service. Education Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree by Enter on Duty (EOD) date. Additional Information Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $76,748 to $197,100, which includes 17.06% locality pay.
