Job Description
This role provides advanced clinical laboratory support in a specialized oncology setting, performing and overseeing a broad range of Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology testing. The position combines hands-on bench work ensuring accurate and timely test results, regulatory compliance, and high-quality patient care.
Responsibilities
Follow all established laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, result reporting, and record maintenance.
Process incoming orders for laboratory testing, including in-house tests and reference laboratory specimens.
Send specimens to reference laboratories for tests not performed in-house and ensure proper handling and documentation for send-out testing.
Perform specimen analysis for Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology, functioning as a generalist across these disciplines.
Prepare peripheral blood smears and perform complete white blood cell (WBC) differentials.
Perform microscopic examination of urinary sediment and record results accurately on worksheets and in the computer system.
Maintain and operate all laboratory instruments and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
Perform daily, weekly, and monthly instrument maintenance as indicated by laboratory protocols.
Adhere to laboratory quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance.
Record and track proper lot numbers for all controls, calibrators, and reagents used in testing.
Participate in proficiency testing at least annually by performing sample analysis and reporting results in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Follow laboratory policies whenever test systems do not meet established acceptable performance criteria.
Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or the reporting of results, take appropriate corrective action, or promptly notify a supervisor when needed.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance standards, in alignment with the quality assurance program.
Maintain proper documentation, including accessioning logs, test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records, and checklists.
Verify all critical test results, ensure appropriate follow-up, and document verification and follow-up actions accurately.
Monitor and maintain adequate inventory of laboratory supplies, ensuring that all supplies are viable and within acceptable limits before use in patient testing.
Prepare reagents, stains, and other chemical solutions as needed for laboratory procedures.
Restock laboratory work areas regularly to support efficient workflow.
Process in-house and incoming test results for charting and ensure timely entry into patient charts.
Chart patient results accurately and in a timely manner to support clinical decision-making.
Coordinate work across multiple locations, including primary responsibility for two main sites and occasional coverage at additional locations as needed.
Support a culture of quality, safety, and continuous improvement within the laboratory.
Essential Skills
Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program, typically resulting in an associate degree, or equivalent education in medical laboratory science.
Generalist experience across Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology testing.
Strong understanding of CLIA and other applicable laboratory regulations and standards.
Proficiency in specimen handling, processing, and analysis for a wide range of laboratory tests.
Ability to perform and interpret quality control procedures, calibrations, and instrument maintenance.
Competence in preparing peripheral blood smears and performing complete WBC differentials.
Ability to perform microscopic examination of urinary sediment accurately.
Experience operating and maintaining a variety of clinical laboratory instruments.
Strong documentation skills for logs, quality control records, maintenance records, and patient results.
Ability to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues affecting test performance or result reporting.
Proficiency with laboratory information systems or computer-based result entry and file maintenance.
Strong organizational skills to manage workflow, prioritize tasks, and maintain inventory.
Work Environment
This position is based in an oncology-focused clinical laboratory environment, providing the opportunity to work closely with tests that directly impact the care of patients with cancer. The schedule is Monday through Friday with no weekends or nights. The laboratory uses standard clinical analyzers and equipment for Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and microscopy, along with computer-based systems for result entry and record keeping. The environment is fast-paced, detail-oriented, and quality-driven, with a strong emphasis on patient impact, collaboration, and professional growth.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $32.00/hr.
