Summary:
The Mission of the Idaho Department of Correction is to create a model correctional system that provides equitable access to programming and opportunities that reflect a community experience, foster connections, and restore victims of crime. Pre-Sentence Investigators work directly with felony criminal defendants, their victims, families, friends, and employers. Responsibilities involve conducting fact-finding interviews and investigations of a criminal defendant's background, recording those facts in a pre-sentence report, and submitting this report to the court for proper sentencing of the defendant. These reports must be comprehensive and accurate in every detail because of their potential bearing on a defendant's sentence. PSIs work closely with the courts and the recommendations made have a direct impact on the defendant's life and family. This posting will be used to fill a position located at District 7 in Idaho Falls, ID.
Responsibilities:
Investigation. Conducts personal interviews with offenders to obtain detailed information in family and criminal background, employment, mental health and substance abuse history, and offenders' version of crime.
Makes collateral contacts with family members, neighbors, law enforcement personnel, attorneys, witnesses, and victims. Gathers, reviews and analyzes criminal background and other police, probation and parole, military, restitution reports, prosecutor's information, and psychological and equivalent evaluations.
Written reports/Recommendations.
Screens information, reviews notes, and evaluates data for validity and to eliminate unsubstantiated, inflammatory, or prejudicial data.
Compiles information, collects and writes a report detailing all facets of the investigation and makes a recommendation concerning disposition of the case and outlines plans for treatment and rehabilitation available to the court.
Writes reports according to Supreme Court Rule 32 guidelines and delivers completed report to judge, prosecuting attorney, and defense counsel.
Attends court proceedings and testifies in court to elaborate on or defend findings and recommendations of pre-sentence report.
Minimum Qualifications: Your resume needs to clearly articulate how your skills, education and experience meet the qualifications below -
Some knowledge of in-depth interviewing to solicit facts, record information, and determine eligibility or an appropriate course of action. Typically gained from completing Six months of full-time experience working in the criminal justice system administering policies and procedures that relate to offender management or legal processes of the criminal justice system. (Office/administrative support work is typically non-qualifying) or at least six months of full-time work experience with a primary responsibility for in-depth interviewing of clients to solicit facts, record information, and make determinations based on applicant's findings. (A Correctional Officer or office/administrative support staff conducting informal day to day interviews is non-qualifying.) or completing an internship (at least 150 hours) related to this field or At least 12 hours of training specific to interviewing (E.g. Motivational Interviewing)
Some knowledge of the criminal justice system. Typically gained from completing at least six credit hours or 36 hours of training regarding criminal justice or a closely related field or at least Six months of full-time experience working in the criminal justice system administering policies and procedures that relate to offender management or legal processes of the criminal justice system. (Office/administrative support work is typically non-qualifying)
Experience writing detailed reports with supporting rationale for recommendations made. Typically gained from completing at least six college level credits specific to report writing such as Statistical Research, Communication, Journalism or equivalent coursework which required the applicant to write fact-based assessments, literature reviews, articles or detailed business reports that included making recommendations with supporting rationale or at least six months of full-time work experience writing fact-based assessments, literature reviews, articles, or detailed business reports to include supporting rationale for recommendations or decisions or the completion of an internship (at least 150 hours) related to this field.
Experience using computer applications software for creating documents, collecting and inputting data, and generating reports. Typically gained from 1 year of experience using a personal computer to enter, retrieve and store data or the completion of a computer training course that covered both basic and intermediate skills training.
Willingness to work with individuals with criminal backgrounds and anti-social behaviors.
Willingness to review documents and graphic materials such as sexual and violent crimes including written and descriptive details.
