Summary This position is located at the Continental District Office in Lakewood, CO. Responsibilities Serves as a Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist in the assigned District, provides technical expertise and oversight for planning, development, implementation, and management of GIS spatial products. Advises and provides assistance in acquiring and compiling geospatial data and reports. Determines best way to present data and provides GIS products upon request including hardcopy maps, graphical displays, and reports that are appropriate for a given project. Coordinates closely with end users to assure GIS product needs are accurately defined and communicated. The incumbent assures the coordination of the Districts GIS/GPS efforts in accurately mapping the cemeteries and recording new interments and headstone placement with established GPS collection methods. The incumbent compiles and analyzes data, prepares reports, and recommends solutions for resolving problems and to ensure compliance with operational standards and measures. Assignments involve special studies and investigations to promptly detect problem conditions in connection with GIS/GPS operations through the District. Studies relate to the full scope of interment operations, grounds maintenance operations, headstone/marker/niche cover operations, and GIS/GPS information management, as well as to other topics such as facilities, personnel, and security. Resulting recommendations and advice may impact more than one interrelated activity and have strong impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of future cemetery GIS/GPS program operations. Preferred Experience: ArcGIS Pro proficiency in a versioned editing environment. ArcGIS Online and Portal for ArcGIS administration. Basic Education Requirements: (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) You must meet the basic education requirement to be considered. Degree: cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites).OR, Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You may qualify based on your experience and education, as described below: GS-11: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-09 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond the 36 semester hours of graduate education earned. Physical Requirements: Occasional physical activity is required for on-site data gathering, during field work, field training sessions, and system operational and quality assurance inspections. The work is primarily sedentary, although some slight physical effort may be required e.g., walking, standing, carrying equipment items related to Spatial Technologies, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) issues, and driving or traveling by motor vehicle and airplane. Work is performed primarily in an office setting, although there are frequent visits to project field sites. Assignments regularly require visits to National Cemeteries, or other areas, and involve moderate risks or discomforts. Protective clothing and gear and observance of safety precautions are required. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, training rooms, and libraries. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. There will be occasional exposure to moderate risks or discomforts in cemetery and construction sites. The incumbent will be required to travel up to 30% of the time, often visiting both developed and undeveloped areas of national cemeteries within the United States.
