THE POSITION
The Department of Agriculture is seeking a licensed veterinarian to provide professional veterinary expertise in regulatory medicine and support test barn operations at Chester Downs (Harrah's) Racetrack. This role includes conducting pre-race and post-race detention barn activities to ensure the integrity and welfare of racehorses. DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Duties and Responsibilities
Supervise Livestock Workers in all test barn operations, including pre-race and post-race detention activities and the collection and processing of blood and urine samples.
Oversee racing-related procedures and maintain accurate records for horses eligible for respiratory-bleeder medication in accordance with Harness Racing Commission rules.
Conduct pre-race inspections of horses entering the paddock to ensure fitness for competition.
Resolve disputes regarding a horse's eligibility for bleeder medication, including reviewing endoscopic examinations when necessary.
Maintain a presence in the paddock and at the finish line during each racing program to observe horses before, during, and after competition.
Examine horses at the request of the judges and report any horse deemed physically unfit to race.
Provide emergency veterinary care when a private practitioner is not immediately available.
Oversee the proper disposal of infected horses and ensure required disinfection procedures are followed; complete necropsy documentation in accordance with established policy.
Train staff in the use of electronic and manual record-keeping systems utilized by the agency.
Attend meetings and hearings at the request of the judges.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
Part-time, per diem employment
Work hours are 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday.
Work schedule is vendor controlled and is determined by the racing schedule.
Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
Graduation from a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Medical Doctor program.
Special Requirement:
This position requires possession of a valid license to practice veterinary medicine as issued by a State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.
Post Employment Requirement:
Possession of a Commission Employee License
Additional Requirements:
