Job Summary
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support facilities engineering projects involving HVAC, plumbing, fire alarm and detection systems, engine generators, and fuel systems across a regional portfolio of utility and support facilities. This role includes project scoping, design, design review, coordination with internal teams and external engineering partners, and engineering support during construction. The position will work on projects for substations, control houses, relay houses, maintenance headquarters, control centers, radio buildings, and other support facilities.
Responsibilities
Assess resource needs for project scoping, design, and construction support.
Review project requirements and scoping results to define engineering needs.
Participate in project kick-off meetings to align on scope, requirements, and resources.
Interpret project proposals and plans and communicate requirements with management and project teams.
Identify engineering issues and help implement effective solutions.
Coordinate with multiple disciplines to refine scope and support preliminary engineering.
Support the development of project cost estimates.
Review scoping and design schedules, monitor progress, and help resolve project issues.
Perform technical reviews of designs, specifications, plans, and schedules to reduce changes during construction.
Provide technical and design support during construction.
Track project issues and trends and recommend corrective actions.
Prepare statements of work, progress reports, technical reports, evaluations, and related documentation.
Serve as a central point of coordination for technical aspects of projects.
Perform in-house mechanical design and review outsourced design work.
Apply mechanical engineering expertise to systems including water service, sanitary sewer, plumbing, compressed air, fire protection, HVAC, radon mitigation, engine generators and fuel tanks, lifts, hoists, and cranes.
Act as a technical liaison with project managers, engineering consultants, and design-build teams.
Recommend and implement updates to mechanical systems, equipment specifications, standards, and replacement strategies to improve reliability, performance, and safety.
Lead design and design oversight activities and provide engineering support during construction.
Advise engineers and technical staff on complex design, construction, operational, and maintenance issues related to facility mechanical systems.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Management, or a directly related field from an ABET accredited school.
10 years of engineering experience.
Knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, and practices applicable to components and facilities on regional transmission systems.
Experience with codes and standards including NFPA, NEC, ASHRAE, and UPC.
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Bluebeam, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
Valid U.S. driver's license.
Preferred
Professional Engineer, PE, license.
Experience working in a government environment.
Work Environment or Schedule
Full-time contract role, up to 40 hours per week.
Office-based environment with a slower-paced setting.
Some flexibility in start time, depending on department needs.
Business casual attire.
Independent work style with limited day-to-day supervision.
Deadline-driven work with coordination across teams and approval processes.
Additional Information
12-month contract position.
Anticipated start date: May 17, 2026.
Phone and/or face-to-face interview required if selected.
First Aid/CPR required.
PPE required.
Benefits include 11 federal holidays, 5 days of vacation in the first year, increasing to 2 weeks after 1 year, up to 7 days of accrued sick time per year, benefits with HSA contribution, and up to a $1,200 signing bonus.
