Summary This position is part of the Pathways Internship Program and is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, Industrial Department, Electro Group in Baltimore, MD. Upon successful completion of the Pathways Program, and at the agency's discretion, appointees may be converted to term or permanent positions in the competitive service. If converted promotion potential is the WG-05. Responsibilities This is an entry level position in the marine electrical area. At the WG-1 level, the official title is Laborer, at the WG-3, Electrical Helper Trainee and at the WG-5, Electrical Helper. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Assisting journeymen mechanics and workers with work that cannot be handled alone and entry level tasks Being taught on proper usage of power and hand tools common to the trade. Being taught how to correctly install neat cable bands with protective rubber, developing a proficiency in this entry level tasking; installing transit blocks in the transit frame; de-installing cable; installing cable, etc. Taught how to neatly and safely wire two and three wire power and control circuits; receiving training on entry level connectors utilized in marine vessel systems, etc. Fabricating connectors utilized in marine vessel systems, display ability and aptitude to terminate connectors. Mandatory training is required which must be successfully completed and other training may occur as necessary for success in the position. Qualifications In order to be eligible for a Pathways Intern Program appointment, you must be a student enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full or part-time degree (diploma, certificate, etc) seeking student in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school. Selected candidates will be required to submit a copy of their transcripts and a letter of enrollment or acceptance for enrollment prior to appointment. If selected you: must sign a Pathways Internship Program Participant Agreement; may be employed throughout the academic year; must maintain status as a current student; maintain good academic standing; must furnish course registration information at the start of each school term; and must provide verification of academic status (transcript) at the end of each academic term. Upon completion of all academic and program requirements, selectees may be non-competitively converted to a term or permanent position in the competitive service.
