The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be hired at a 0.51 FTE level to work on independent and collaborative research on weed ecology and integrated weed management under the supervision of Dr. Fabian Menalled at the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences of Montana State University.

Position Details

General Statement

The Weed Ecology Lab evaluates the underpinnings supporting sustainable weed management programs and help farmers design applied solutions aimed at reducing their dependence on off-farm inputs.

Duties and Responsibilities

Designing and managing lab, greenhouse, and field experiments

Analyzing multidimensional agroecological data

Assisting undergraduate and graduate students in their research endeavors.

Present research findings at regional and national conferences and extension events.

The position will require seasonal travel to research locations across Montana to establish, maintain, collect data, and harvest research plots. Travel outside Montana may be required.

Additional duties may involve teaching undergraduate- and/or graduate-level courses, and presenting results in stakeholders' meetings.

Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Ph.D. in ecology, environmental sciences, agronomy, weed science, or a closely related discipline.

Knowledge and experience in experimental designs, agronomic operations, large-scale cropping systems, and scientific and grant writing.

A strong record of peer-reviewed articles.

High proficiency in graphical and statistical software, such as RStudio, Python, ARM , and BioRender.

Knowledge of fundamental ecological theories and their applications in agroecosystems.

Demonstrate system-level understanding and skills in multivariate analysis, trait-based approaches, and phylogenetics.

Experience in presenting results at stakeholders' meetings such as field days and workshops.

Experience in interacting with undergraduate and graduate students.

Capacity to work independently and in teams.

Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Strong organizational aptitude, effective communication skills, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Valid driving license and Montana pesticide applicator license would be preferred.

The ability to operate farm equipment, such as tractors, planters, tillers, and sprayers, would be a plus.

Experience with production of conventional and organic cropping systems common to Montana

Experience identifying plants in a variety of Montana plant communities

Willingness and experience to supervise undergraduate students for accurate data capture

Willingness and experience to assist graduate students in their field, greenhouse, and laboratory activities

The Successful Candidate Will

The successful candidate should have a strong publication record and grant-writing skills.

Physical Demands

Ability to tolerate soil and plant dust and pesticide application while wearing recommended safety gear.

During trips to remote field locations, and or during planting and harvest, work hours may be more than 8 hours per individual day. Overnight trips may be required.

Must possess or have the ability to obtain a pesticide applicators license within six months of hire date.

This position requires seasonal travel to field sites to plant, maintain, and harvest research plots and therefore requires a valid driver's license.
