Overview
Bowhead is hiring an Interior Ballistics Range Technician for the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) on Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), MD. This individual performs standardized or prescribed assignments involving small to medium caliber weapon systems.
Responsibilities
Performs standardized or prescribed assignments involving a sequence of related operations. Follows standard work methods on recurring assignments but receives explicit instructions on unfamiliar assignments; technical adequacy of routine work is reviewed on completion; non-routine work may also be reviewed in progress. Performs at this level one or a combination of duties including, but not limited to:
Following specific instructions, assembles or constructs simple or standard equipment or parts; may service or repair simple instruments or equipment.
Conducts a variety of instrumented experiments using established methods as tasked by government facility manager. Prepares test specimens, adjusts and operates equipment, and records test data, pointing out deviations resulting from equipment malfunction or observational errors.
Conducts experiments which may require minor modifications in test setup or procedure.
Experimental setup to include mounting instrumentation and electrical and communications wiring.
Perform non-routine and complex assignments involving the reduction of instrumentation data that documents the results of interior ballistic experiments; high speed imagery manipulation, etc.
Extracts engineering data from various prescribed but non-standardized sources; processes the data following well-defined methods including elementary algebra and geometry; presents the data in prescribed form.
Check drawings provided by engineers and scientists to determine the adequacy of the drawings for target construction and successful completion of the associated test.
Operate standard test equipment; oscilloscopes, x-rays, high speed and still cameras, digitizers, etc.
Install and maintain transducers and equipment for use in measurement of pressure, velocity, force, displacement and other ballistic measurements.
Create or modify test items and fixtures using lathes, milling machines, drills, and other standard machine shop equipment.
Troubleshoot and correct equipment malfunctions.
Pass all required training deemed necessary by the facility manager and be familiar with all sites and SOPs for every site at the facility.
Help train lower level personnel.
Possess Certified Ammo Handler.
Currently certified or has the ability to become a certified small and medium caliber loader-gunner (Gunner Category G-II).
Currently certified or has the ability to become an certified AA&E Test Director is highly desired.
Perform maintenance/upkeep (sweeping, general organization and housekeeping) of facility when necessary; modify facility as required for specific projects.
Conduct other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school degree or equivalent.
Abide by all safety and security requirements.
Be able to take direction from more experienced co-workers.
Be proficient in use and understanding basic measuring devices (tape measures, scales, micrometers).
Possess basic computer skills (e-mail, word, excel).
Possess basic carpentry skills/use of hand and power tools.
Basic level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
Ability to move and/or lift up to 50 lbs repetitively.
Some work may be performed outdoors exposing incumbent to all @types of weather conditions. Incumbent must follow all safety regulations and use proper protective gear or equipment.
Travel Required - occasional travel to other facilities within APG to assist in experiment setup and execution.
Working knowledge of oscilloscopes, x-rays, high speed and still cameras, digitizers, transducers, and equipment for use in measurement of pressure, velocity, force, displacement and other ballistic measurements.
Capability to use lathes, milling machines, drills, and other standard machine shop equipment.
Computer proficiency required. Ability to create solid models and engineering drawings highly desired.
Proficiency with scientific/engineering software such as MATLAB highly desired
Must maintain at all times:
Secret Clearance
Certification to operate Government and Bowhead Equipment and Vehicles
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively.
Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time.
Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically.
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
