Description
The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks and Recreation is currently seeking a Maintenance Mechanic II for the Bureau of Parks & Forestry. This is a mid-level position for the repair of portable equipment used by the Bureau Parks & Forestry. The candidate should be familiar with Zero turn mowers, pull behind mowers, and small mowers and other equipment used in landscaping operations. Main responsibilities for this position will be daily repair and preventive maintenance, tire repair and operation of a service truck as needed. The candidate should have knowledge of bench and hand held grinders, metric and standard sockets and wrenches that are used for repairing equipment. Preventative maintenance on mowers will also be a part of this job. Any small engine equipment repair experience is a plus.

Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Maintains equipment by conducting major repairs to portable equipment used by the Bureau Parks & Forestry, repairing tractors, out front mowers, weed eaters, blowers and emergency equipment.
Conducts minor repairs by performing daily maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance on frequently used equipment.
Performs related duties such as tire repair and operation of a service truck as needed.
Supervises and oversees repair shop and yard in absence of supervisor by taking care of daily time sheets and work tickets, assigning tasks, and evaluating performance.
The candidate should have knowledge of bench and handheld grinders, metric and standard sockets and wrenches that are used for repairing equipment.
Performs related duties by writing specifications on equipment purchases.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Two years' experience as Maintenance Mechanic II or in performing basic mechanical repairs to landscaping equipment.
Experience operating a service truck providing field maintenance to repair on small equipment, preferred

Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM. Work hours may change seasonally

Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
