SUMMARY:
The Public Health Nurse provides comprehensive public health nursing skills and services. Promotes and
protects the health of populations, using knowledge from nursing, social, and public health sciences.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides education to community on health topics and available services. Prepares promotional
materials and conducts presentations.
Collaborates with others in the community such as, schools, community agencies, service organizations,
etc. to achieve public health goals.
Participates in health policy development and health data collection and analysis.
Provides consultation and immunizations to international travelers.
Performs appropriate nursing assessments, screening tests, and care coordination to individuals, groups
of individuals, and families. Provides appropriate individualized health education, counseling, and
referrals.
Investigates incidents and outbreaks of reportable communicable disease. Follows appropriate
reporting procedures. Provides interventions and education to prevent spread of disease. Participates
in outbreak response teams as necessary.
Provides case management to clients with tuberculosis (latent and active). Conducts contact
investigations. Performs disease control activities. Administers TB skin tests.
Administers immunizations to infants, children, and adults in office and community settings.
Participates in mass immunization campaigns. Promotes immunizations within the community.
Actively participates in emergency/disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. Attends trainings,
drills, and exercises.
Assists in addressing social determinants of health through developing, implementing, and evaluating
community health programs, including identification and management of grant funding.
Acts as a mentor to students. Assists in the orientation of new staff.
Performs other duties as required or assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Occasionally oversees work of support staff, particularly at off-site activities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
One or more years of experience as a professional nurse.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited school preferred.
Public health or community nursing experience preferred.
Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of public health and public health nursing.
Knowledge of and the ability to plan, develop, implement, modify, and evaluate public health programs
Must be culturally competent and willing to work with individuals, families, and groups of varying ages,
and economic and cultural backgrounds.
Clinical skills including physical assessment, injections and medication administration, interviewing, and
counseling.
Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing. Ability to make effective oral presentations
before groups of people.
Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment.
Ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances especially during an emergency, disaster, or disease
outbreak.
Skill using computer and other electronic communication devices. Skills associated with word
processing, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, email, Google Docs and Google Drive, social media, and
other data applications, programs and tools.
Ability to exercise tact, courtesy, and discretion. Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATION:
Candidate must have current Colorado Registered Nurse License and a valid Colorado Driver's
License.
Rio Grande County Public Health is hiring a PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE. 40 hours/week $31.39 to $33.31/hr DOE. Registered Nurse license required. Pre-employment drug testing.
