Job Description
The Jr. Software Engineer provides technical support for Energy Management Systems (EMS), Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and related technical infrastructure used in Transmission Operations centers. This role focuses on maintaining reliable system operations, improving data quality and tools, supporting Protection and Control SCADA activities, and ensuring that internal standards and performance indicators are effectively implemented. The position requires a high degree of adaptability, strong problem-solving skills, and a commitment to meeting customer needs and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
Provide technical support for EMS and SCADA systems used in Transmission Operations centers, ensuring reliable and secure operation.
Assist less experienced analysts with problem resolution and provide guidance on EMS and SCADA support activities.
Train lower-level analysts on specific equipment, software, and SCADA support processes to build team capability.
Maintain reliable operations of EMS and SCADA systems by monitoring performance, identifying issues, and implementing corrective actions.
Improve and recommend enhancements to the quality and reliability of EMS and SCADA data and related services.
Maintain real-time data interfaces between EMS, SCADA, field devices, and other operational systems.
Develop, improve, and implement EMS and SCADA tools and software to support operational needs.
Keep EMS and SCADA tools current with evolving technologies and internal standards.
Build and maintain custom EMS and SCADA one-line displays to support Transmission Operations.
Perform modeling, checkout, and commissioning of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) to ensure accurate and reliable field data.
Build and maintain EMS and SCADA models that accurately reflect the transmission system and connected assets.
Define and recommend implementation of internal EMS and SCADA standards to improve consistency and performance.
Define and implement Human Performance Initiative rules and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to SCADA processes.
Provide technical support for Protection and Control Engineering (PCE) SCADA standards and production activities related to Transmission.
Assist in standards development, project scoping, RTU setting creation, and implementation troubleshooting for Protection and Control SCADA projects.
Scope small to medium SCADA projects with limited supervision and provide detailed feedback on scoping questions to PCE and Telecom teams.
Identify issues with SCADA-related processes and tools, propose potential solutions, and provide input to more experienced personnel.
Complete complex Remote Point Assignments (RPA) that include both new and legacy components with limited supervision.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science
Experience with SCADA systems, preferably within the power utility or transmission environment.
Experience working with Remote Terminal Units (RTUs).
Experience working with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
SCADA experience in a utility or power distribution environment.
Experience with power distribution, Distribution Management Systems (DMS), and related electrical engineering concepts.
Networking experience, including familiarity with communication protocols and networked control systems.
Experience maintaining real-time data interfaces and working with operational data systems.
Familiarity with EMS and SCADA modeling, including building and maintaining system models and one-line displays.
Exposure to legacy communication technologies such as asynchronous and synchronous communications.
Understanding of business unit or operating company systems that interface with EMS and SCADA is preferred.
Ability to identify process and tool issues and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.
Interest in participating in and supporting internal training initiatives such as Transmission University or similar programs.
Motivation to build a long-term career in the power utility industry, which offers a stable and reliable field of work.
Work Environment
This role operates in an office environment five days a week, supporting Transmission Operations centers and associated EMS/SCADA infrastructure. Work involves extensive use of computer systems, SCADA and EMS applications, RTU and PLC configuration tools, and networking and communication technologies. The position may require periodic after-hours support to address urgent issues and maintain continuous system reliability. The work culture emphasizes reliability, safety, continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and collaboration across engineering, operations, and telecom teams within the power utility industry.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $33.10/hr.
