Job Title: Shipping Assistant
Job Description
The Shipping Assistant supports daily shipping operations by resolving shipment issues, coordinating with carriers and internal teams, and ensuring accurate and timely processing of domestic and international orders. This role requires strong attention to detail, solid computer skills, and the ability to work both in an office setting and on the warehouse floor to keep products moving efficiently and accurately.
Responsibilities
Resolve shipping issues such as mis-shipments, shortages, damages, delivery problems, and freight charge discrepancies.
Handle incoming and outgoing calls related to product shipments, including communication with carriers, customer service, sales, and operations.
Evaluate aging orders that have not shipped and take appropriate action to ensure timely fulfillment.
Accurately generate shipping documents, including freight terms and commercial invoices, for domestic and international shipments.
Create and process pick tickets and assign carriers in a way that minimizes freight costs while meeting service requirements.
Investigate freight claims, determine root causes, and provide clear disposition and documentation.
Oversee the prompt completion of all customer-specific freight shipments and international orders to meet customer requirements and deadlines.
Schedule carrier pickups to align with shipping schedules and production timelines.
Support warehouse activities related to shipping, receiving, and inventory as needed.
Collaborate with team members to maintain accurate warehouse inventory through activities such as cycle counts.
Use computer systems, including Microsoft Office and Oracle (after training), to manage shipping data and documentation.
Operate or coordinate the use of warehouse equipment such as forklifts as needed and as qualified.
Comply with all plant safety policies and procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall efficiency of the shipping and warehouse operations.
Essential Skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Ability to use computers confidently and learn new systems, including training on an Oracle-based system.
Experience with shipping processes, including generating pick tickets and shipping documents.
Familiarity with freight shipments and international orders.
Experience working with warehouse inventory, including receiving and cycle counts.
Ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation and data entry.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds periodically.
Ability to sit for prolonged periods, and to stand and walk intermittently throughout the day.
Ability to bend, push, pull, and kneel as required for warehouse and shipping activities.
Ability to work in weather extremes when required by shipping and warehouse operations.
Willingness and ability to wear all required PPE and comply with all plant safety policies.
Self-directed work style with the ability to work independently.
Ability to collaborate effectively and work well in a team environment.
Flexibility to work hours beyond the scheduled shift during the week and to work weekends as needed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with shipping, freight, and warehouse operations in a manufacturing or distribution environment.
Knowledge of freight claims processes and carrier coordination.
Experience with international shipping documentation and commercial invoices.
Familiarity with Oracle or other ERP systems used for shipping and inventory management.
Experience operating forklifts or other warehouse equipment, where appropriately trained and certified.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple shipping tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Continuous improvement mindset with an interest in helping improve shipping and planning processes.

Work Environment
The role is based in a very clean, air-controlled facility that supports manufacturing and warehouse operations. Work takes place both in an office setting, using computers and Microsoft Office applications as well as an Oracle system, and on the warehouse floor, where you will be involved in shipping, receiving, and inventory activities. The position may require working beyond the scheduled shift during the week and on weekends when business needs demand it. You will move between desk work and physical tasks, including lifting up to 25 pounds, standing, walking, bending, pushing, pulling, and kneeling. The role may involve exposure to weather extremes when working in shipping or dock areas. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required, and strict adherence to plant safety policies is expected. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of SMITHFIELD, NC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $15.00 - $19.00/hr.
