The Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Texas A&M University is hiring a new Academic Advisor III!
In this role, you will independently engage and empower undergraduate students as they navigate their academic and career journeys. You'll play a key role in driving student retention and success by building meaningful advising relationships, clarifying program and degree requirements, and helping students confidently navigate academic policies and procedures. As an Academic Advisor III, you will have the opportunity to work on special projects such as major changes, honors guidance, or graduation clearance. You will also contribute to evaluating and improving advising practices while serving as a mentor and trainer for fellow Academic Advisors and members of the campus community,
Salary: $54,450.00
Special Note: Some work may be required beyond normal office hours and/or on weekends. Some travel is required.
Opportunities to Contribute:
Advise Students
Advise students on academic planning, educational goals, majors/minors, and career or graduate school pathways.
Guide students through academic processes.
Review academic records and counsel students on course selection, degree progress, and exception requests.
Provide input on academic standing and probationary decisions.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date advising records and student notes.
Delivers Student Success and Retention Strategies
Engage students through in-person and virtual outreach.
Refer students to appropriate academic, career, health, and wellness resources.
Monitor student progress and identify students who may benefit from intervention or additional support.
Coordinate and support advising, retention, and student success events and campaigns.
Assist with reporting and data analysis related to advising initiatives and special populations.
Use developmental advising strategies to support students' academic and personal growth.
Collaborative Leadership
Collaborate with campus partners on student retention and success initiatives.
Contribute to professional development.
Develop and deliver training for faculty, staff, and advisors on advising tools, resources, and best practices.
Respond to student mental health concerns and refer to appropriate campus resources.
Team Building and Support
Assist in the training of new staff members and student workers within the academic advising department and serve as a resource.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree
4 years of academic advising experience in higher education
A well-qualified candidate may also possess:
Knowledge of NACADA advising values, theories, models, professional standards, and legal requirements, including FERPA and confidentiality.
Texas A&M University's history, mission, vision, values, and culture.
The history and role of academic advising in higher education and at Texas A&M University.
Texas A&M University policies, procedures, rules, and regulations relevant to academic advising.
Understanding of student learning and success outcomes, student populations, and common academic and personal challenges.
Knowledge of curriculum, degree requirements, academic policies, and campus/community resources that support student success and well-being.
Experience using advising systems, data tools, and technologies to support students and evaluate advising outcomes.
Ability to coach, mentor, and supervise advisors or student employees
Ability to plan, implement, and assess advising, retention, and student success initiatives.
Ability to develop and deliver training and professional development.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport, maintain advising relationships, and communicate confidentially across modalities.
Ability to guide students in academic planning, decision-making, goal setting, and referral to appropriate resources.
