Job Title: Electrical EngineerJob Description
This role focuses on the electrical design and analysis of complex project scopes, including power generation systems, substations and power distribution systems, and lighting and grounding/lightning protection systems. You will perform estimating, conceptual and cost planning studies, layouts, system sizing calculations, specification development, and preparation of electrical one-line diagrams. You communicate technical solutions clearly to both engineers and non-engineers, mentor junior electrical engineers, and may serve as the Electrical Engineering Lead depending on project size and complexity. You maintain a strong focus on the end product-whether engineering, fabrication, or construction-while ensuring effective communication across disciplines, proactive management of change, and responsibility for cost, schedule, quantity, and budget control.
Responsibilities
Design and analyze electrical systems for assigned project scopes, including power generation systems, substations, and power distribution systems.
Develop lighting, grounding, and lightning protection systems in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
Perform estimating, conceptual studies, cost and planning studies, and system layouts for electrical portions of capital projects.
Execute system sizing calculations and develop electrical specifications and one-line diagrams.
Design electrical systems primarily using Revit, including lighting systems and related electrical components.
Perform vendor evaluations, including sizing and selection of equipment, and collaborate with procurement to support purchasing decisions.
Utilize electrical system modeling software such as SKM and/or ETAP to perform power system studies, including short circuit, coordination, arc flash, load flow, and DC analysis.
Develop area classifications based on applicable codes and standards, including Class I and II gas and dust classified areas.
Provide technical guidance for the electrical portions of assigned projects to engineers and designers.
Review and provide oversight of calculations and design deliverables prepared by other engineers and designers.
Develop and monitor project scopes and schedules for the electrical discipline and assigned team members.
Identify and communicate changes in scope and schedule and assess their impact on project cost, schedule, and resources.
Coordinate electrical design efforts with other engineering disciplines and client personnel to ensure integrated project delivery.
Monitor and ensure that design work and documents are technically correct, consistent with applicable codes and standards, logically presented, and constructible.
Lead and supervise the completion of electrical engineering tasks, effectively managing discipline schedules and budgets.
Support the development of design bases for capital project cost estimates and contribute to effective project execution and adherence to project procedures.
Maintain clear and effective verbal and written communication throughout the project lifecycle.
Mentor junior electrical engineers and support their technical and professional development.
Essential Skills
Proven experience in electrical engineering and design, preferably within heavy industrial, power generation, or chemical manufacturing environments.
Strong knowledge of design practices for medium and low voltage electrical distribution systems, including lighting, grounding, lightning protection, power distribution, heat tracing, protective relaying, fire detection, and electrical area classification.
Hands-on experience applying industry codes and standards such as NEC, IEEE, NEMA, and NFPA.
Knowledge of electrical design practices for Class I and II areas classified for gas and dust.
Ability to work proficiently in Revit for electrical system and lighting design.
Ability to use AutoCAD and Bluebeam for electrical design documentation, review, and markups.
Proficiency with electrical system modeling software such as SKM and/or ETAP for power system studies, including short circuit, coordination, arc flash, load flow, and DC analysis.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Effective verbal and written communication skills for interaction with engineering teams, project stakeholders, and non-technical personnel.
Demonstrated ability to supervise and lead electrical engineering work, including managing discipline schedules and budgets.
Experience contributing to the development of design bases for capital project cost estimates.
Experience in effective project execution and familiarity with project procedures.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Background in electrical engineering and design within heavy industrial, power generation, or chemical manufacturing settings.
Experience designing electrical systems primarily in Revit, including lighting design and power distribution layouts.
Experience performing vendor evaluations, equipment sizing, and supporting procurement activities.
Experience with capital projects, including the development and monitoring of project scopes and schedules for the electrical discipline.
Ability to provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and designers.
Ability to coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams and client representatives.
Attention to detail in ensuring that design documents are accurate, code-compliant, logically organized, and constructible.
Comfort working with area classification development based on relevant codes and standards.
Familiarity with schematic development and electrical one-line diagram creation.
Work Environment
You will work in a professional engineering environment focused on capital projects in heavy industrial, power generation, and chemical manufacturing settings. The role involves extensive use of design and analysis tools such as Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and electrical system modeling software like SKM and ETAP. You collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, procurement personnel, and client representatives, often working on multiple projects concurrently. Work typically takes place in an office or hybrid office/field setting, with periods of focused design work, coordination meetings, and project reviews. The environment emphasizes safety, adherence to industry codes and standards, and high-quality, constructible design deliverables, with a professional dress code appropriate to an engineering and industrial project @context.
