Summary The New Mexico VA Healthcare Network is recruiting for a Mason located in the Maintenance and Operations section of the Engineering Department under the Carpenter and Internal Project section. The incumbent performs maintenance, repairs, applications and installation associated with a variety of building trades tasks through- out the medical facility. Responsibilities Major duties include: Repairs and makes alterations to masonry walls by demolishing existing construction where necessary and installing new brick, concrete block, tile and/or structural sidewalks. Mixes mortar according to job requirements. Mixes and applies scratch, brown and white coats of plaster to repair existing and finish new walls and ceilings. Performs cement finishing duties when work is required as part of the maintenance and alterations program. Uses a variety of hand and power tools such as brick or napping hammer, brick or skill saw in cutting and shaping brick and axe, pick, chisel, and hammer in cutting or shaping stone. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The position involves heavy work, occasionally lifting of 100 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Work requires continual standing, walking, climbing, and bending. Ladders, scaffolds, swing stages and platforms are sued to provide access to work on interiors and exteriors of buildings. Incumbent will work inside and outside under inclement weather conditions. Due to the nature of the work, incumbent will at all times be careful working around flammable and toxic fluids as well as practice and enforce safety. Work is performed throughout the medical facility and surrounding buildings. Safety practices and PPE will always prevail in all working conditions Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
