Summary You will serve as a HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSER in the Port Operations Program of NB SAN DIEGO. Responsibilities You will investigate all reported oil spills or sheens on water within area of responsibility. You will perform placement and opening/closing of oil boom around ships. You will distribute and recover absorbent pads in the water to recover any floating oil. You will maintain and repair oil spill equipment to include small boats, boat trailers, boom reels, oil boom, and all ancillary machinery. You will deliver or collect hazardous material to and from work sites following regulatory requirements (e.g., labeling, identification, containerization). You will review receipt documentation of hazardous waste for accuracy. Repack, consolidate, or blend hazardous wastes into containers for storage and shipment. Additional Information (Continued): Physical Demands The work requires varying periods of standing, climbing, boarding and de-boarding of trailered or floating craft. Must be able to climb vertical ladders and step over three foot bulkheads on a rocking boat, which requires the use of legs, hands, and arms. Work Environment Incumbent will work outside in all kinds of weather and inside an engine repair facility. Will be subjected outdoors to hot sun, spray, rain, and fog. Will be subjected indoors to hear and noise of an operating diesel engine within the engine compartment. Incumbent will be exposed to the following; industrial dirt, dust, grease, oil, industrial fumes, and airborne particles. Industrial noise generated by operating machinery and equipment with the possibility of hearing loss. Eye hazards will exist in certain operations. Will be exposed to organic growth (such as sea growth, barnacles and shell fish in boat yards, dry-docks, saltwater systems, and other areas exposed to seawater. Will be required to use protective devices, clothing or equipment while exposed to adverse environmental and hazardous work assignments. The incumbent may be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful and hazardous physical and chemical agents are present. These agents may include, but are not limited to: fumes, dust, noise, heat, and industrial chemicals including but not limited to fuels, oils, greases and solvents, etc. Drive boats to and from piers; in and around the harbor.
