Job Description Summary
The Advanced Milling Process Engineer will play a key role within GE Aerospace's Integrated Manufacturing Engineering (IME) organization, leading efforts to develop, modernize, and implement manufacturing processes. In this role, you will collaborate with GE Aerospace sites and Engineering teams to design and implement scalable machining solutions that support new technologies and designs, enhance flexibility, and simplify part transfers.
You will focus on developing and improving manufacturing strategies, including designing fixtures, selecting cutting tools, creating CAM programs, and testing processes directly on the machine in a lab environment. This role also involves testing and validating advanced airfoil milling and adaptive machining solutions, maintaining detailed records of test results, reviewing them with the technical team, and identifying opportunities for improvement.
Additionally, you will communicate findings and recommendations with cross-functional teams from diverse backgrounds, ensuring alignment across all stakeholders. By maintaining accurate documentation, capturing lessons learned, improving workflows, and developing innovative solutions, you will drive process development and contribute to the success of experimental and cutting-edge manufacturing processes.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
Design, test, and validate innovative machining solutions, including adaptive machining and airfoil milling, while driving continuous improvement and collaborating with the technical team.
Take an active role in testing and validating new technologies, including designing fixtures, selecting cutting tools, and ensuring successful implementation of hardware advancements.
Collaborate with technical teams to implement and stabilize process changes, train on advanced methodologies, and expand adaptive machining approaches to new hardware.
Partner with cross-functional teams globally to ensure success in machining development processes and alignment across stakeholders.
Troubleshoot and optimize manufacturing processes in a step-by-step manner, identifying root causes, implementing solutions, and coordinating updates with internal and external teams.
Develop next-generation manufacturing methods to improve safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
Maintain accurate documentation of processes, test results, and lessons learned to support continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
Build and maintain a strong technical network, fostering collaboration and respect among technical peers both internally and externally.
Travel to support GE Aerospace sites and suppliers, both domestically and internationally, and participate in external training or conferences as needed.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline from an accredited university or college, (or high school diploma/GED with at least 7 years of experience with understanding of engineering principles.)
Desired Characteristics
Proficiency in NX CAD/CAM or similar software, including 3D freeform surfaces, creating milling setups, debugging G-code programs, and error-proofing processes.
Experience in milling processes, particularly with heat-resistant alloys.
Expertise in fixturing concepts and selecting cutting tools for machining processes.
Experience in multi-axis machine tool kinematics, volumetric errors and probe/machine calibration methods.
Hands-on experience with testing, validating, and optimizing milling programs.
Ability to troubleshoot problems in a structured, step-by-step manner and identify root causes.
Familiarity with coding programs for process development and data analysis, such as Matlab, Python, Visual C++, or C#, through coursework or projects.
Strong presentation and communication skills to share findings, lessons learned, and recommendations with cross-functional teams.
Precision in maintaining accurate documentation of processes, test results, and lessons learned.
Ability to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
Willingness to take an active role in testing and implementing new technologies and hardware advancements.
Willingness to deliver turn-key engineering/manufacturing solutions to GE internal or external customers.
Experience with simultaneous 5-axis machining, including airfoil milling.
Experience or exposure to adaptive milling methods (i.e. best fit, tool path morphing).
Experience in CNC communication protocols (i.e. OPC UA, TCP/IP, PROFINET, FOCAS).
Proficiency in Concepts NREC Airfoil Milling CAM software.
Familiarity with milling process mechanics, including cutting forces, chatter vibrations, and machine controls.
Familiarity with Siemens and/or Fanuc controllers.
