Senior Software Engineer - UI Component Systems

The Component Systems team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer who specializes in UI Component Systems and Android app development. You will help shape the user experience for Realtor.com®'s consumer-facing Mobile applications, which see millions of unique visitors daily. You will contribute to the design and architectural decisions for our internal component library and its supporting ecosystem of tools and processes. As a part of this team, you will play a key role in developing a critical component enabling our engineering community across all of our consumer product lines to build scalable applications.
We believe in leveraging the best tools to solve problems faster. You will be expected to utilize AI coding assistants and LLMs proficiently to accelerate development velocity, generate boilerplate, and troubleshoot complex debugging scenarios. Beyond simple usage, this role requires the critical judgment to verify AI-generated outputs for security, performance, and accuracy. You should be comfortable integrating AI tooling into your daily workflow to eliminate repetitive tasks, allowing you to focus on high-impact architectural and strategic engineering challenges.
What You'll Do:
Work in the Component Systems team to develop and optimize our internal component library used by the design and engineering community across our consumer product teams
Create modular, performant, responsive, highly scalable, and accessible (WCAG 2.1) Kotlin components in collaboration with our Design System and Product teams that adhere to our best practices
Ensure that components are fully tested using automated frameworks, including unit, component, and end-to-end (e2e) tests
Optimize developer experience by developing intuitive component APIs, authoring thorough documentation, and providing migration guides for our engineering community
Provide engineering and design teams with technical guidance and support for component usage, code reviews, feature requests, bug fixes, UI and accessibility best practices through office hours and ad hoc requests
Contribute to an ecosystem of tools, documentation, and processes that support our Component System users and minimize development friction
Participate in discussions on component systems and library architecture with engineers to build high-quality components with intuitive APIs that are easy to implement
Build relationships with designers and engineers across different product lines and bridge gaps between product design and engineering
Research and identify opportunities for improvements to our existing processes and solutions, and create proof of concepts
Collaborate with the team lead and leadership to contribute to short/long-term goals and roadmaps
Engage in Agile ceremonies like standups, office hours, weekly planning, and retrospectives and work in a development process that is primarily Kanban
What You'll Bring:
5+ years of development experience with up-to-date knowledge of Kotlin, Java and the Android SDK
Passionate about Design Systems and solving complex UI problems, and have a great sense for identifying design/interface patterns
Attention to detail, great sense of design, and commitment to beautiful user experiences
Strong experience working with Rx, Dagger, MVVM, and Android architecture components (ie. Jetpack)
Experience with component library architecture and best practices around responsive layouts, accessibility, and animation
Experience working in the Atomic Design methodology and breaking down complex UI designs into modular pieces that can be intuitively assembled with each other
Experience with component systems toolings such as Storybook, Figma, and Zeroheight
Ability to troubleshoot and debug mobile application problems such as UI rendering performance, layout issues, APK/App Bundle size optimization, memory leaks, battery consumption monitoring and optimization, accessibility problems, device fragmentation bugs, etc.
Familiarity with manual accessibility testing using assistive technologies
Experience working within an engineering platform or enablement team
Experience working with a Design Systems team
Ability to communicate technical concepts and trade-offs to both engineering and business audiences
Strong communication skills with a growth and learning mindset
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering/related field or equivalent professional experience
