Responsibilities Major duties for this position include (but are not limited to): Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement @type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls; Interprets basic electronic terms and symbols when reading technical/system diagrams and schematics; Applies a variety of electrical formulas, tables, charts, and color codes in order to mount, ground and install wiring and equipment for electrical/electronic systems; Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings and connections, and installs wiring couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices; Inspects electrical components, such as transformers and circuit breakers; Identifies electrical problems using a variety of testing devices; Interprets and applies state and local building regulations based on the National Electrical Code; Traces hard-to-locate defects or problems associated with the completion of repairs and installations; Performs other related duties as assigned. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Works from ladders, scaffolding, and hydraulic work platforms. Often works in portions of the electrical systems requiring attention that are in cramped, dirty, and hard-to-reach locations. The work involves prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping and bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally will be required to lift and carry items over 50 lbs. Electricians are exposed to a variety of weather conditions, both winter and summer, in making repairs and installations on exterior work sites. During emergency repairs, extremes of bad weather are sometimes present. Many work sites are hot, dirty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped, and with unpleasant odors. Occasionally, will be required to work in the vicinity of asbestos containing materials. The incumbent will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner. Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
