Summary The Research Registered Nurse (RN) Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising research activities. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. Responsibilities The Research Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for assessing individuals to determine their qualification for inclusion in research protocols, responsible for understanding the regulatory guidelines that guide the conduct of research, assessing and acting independently within scope in response to research related issues, communicating effectively with patients, their significant others, nursing staff, and other healthcare team members involved in research. The nurse will be responsible for screening patients for inclusion in studies, documenting this assessment, providing information relevant to the study, and obtaining informed consent. The nurse will assist in directing the provision of research education and regulatory compliance assessment for each study and patient record, and they may also engage in quality improvement for study recruitment protocols. The nurse may provide oversight of licensed practical nurses/nursing assistants as appropriate to the setting. Follows procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in the unit/program level quality improvement process and initiatives as well as customer service programs. Manages all elements of study conduct and associated clinical care of participants. Collaborates with investigators to advance medical knowledge. Demonstrates mastery of the Research Registered Nurse role in drug/device clinical trials (in both industry and VA Cooperative Studies Program) including the areas of cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus @type 2, arrhythmias, heart failure, and infectious disease. Leads a clinical study team, successfully directing and overseeing the work of two or more Research Associates. Assimilates large amounts of electronic data in a short period of time to screen medical records for potential research candidates. Shifts easily between competing responsibilities within limited time frames, diplomatically managing unexpected schedule modifications and/or challenging study participants. Maintains research-specific CITI training certifications for GCP, Biosafety, and Human Subjects Protection. Is an experienced user of the following data capture systems: Medidata, Inform, REDCap, DataLabs, DFExplore, Prosoft. The nurse may also provide oversight of research assistants/associates as appropriate to the setting. To maintain optimal coordination of a clinical trial, the nurse will maintain close communication with investigators and study sponsors. The individual will devise patient recruitment strategies in collaboration with the research investigator and clinical teams. The individual will ensure HIPAA compliance in all aspects of study conduct. The individual is responsible for timely, complete, and accurate reporting of adverse events and serious adverse events. The individual will collaborate professionally and effectively with pharmaceutical and device sponsors. The individual will create, utilize and maintain source documents and other participant-related study documents. The individual will manage 5-10 clinical trials simultaneously while meeting/exceeding challenging enrollment goals and maintaining excellence in all study processes. The individual will assess feasibility of new study protocols from the standpoints of study logistics, staffing, time requirements, and patient population suitability. The individual will occasionally travel to research meetings, generally requiring 2-5 days away from home. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program.
