Summary This Patient Safety Manager Registered Nurse (RN) is located in the Performance/Quality Management Service at the Brockton campus location. This position is a full-time position at 40 hours a week. Responsibilities The Patient Safety Manager RN collaborates with other members of the Patient Safety program and possesses comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of the health care field with emphasis on patient safety. The incumbent is responsible for providing leadership in developing a culture of safety within VA Boston Healthcare System. S/He possesses strong skills in consulting, education, database and information management, evaluation techniques, group process, team and organizational development, and customer service and satisfaction. Application of such knowledge must include a systems perspective to appropriately influence care across the continuum. The incumbent must therefore demonstrate an ability to teach and make formal presentations. The incumbent reports to the Associate Director, Quality Management, in line to the Medical Center Director, and has work coordinated through the Lead Patient Safety Manager. As an active member of the Performance Management Team, the incumbent demonstrates professional practice in leadership assignments and is part of planning and controlling program resources to include financial, human, material and/or informational to aid in carrying out program responsibilities. The Patient Safety Manager RN duties include, but are not limited to: Responsibility for promoting and supporting a culture of safety throughout the organization. Reviews all incidents and initiates/coordinates Root Cause Analysis or Healthcare Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (HFMEA) of al significant incidents, when warranted. Compiles, coordinates, and submits facility responses/reports to the National Center for Patient Safety Med Watch. Functions with considerable independence in assessing Patient Safety issues; planning and applying methods of study; recommending appropriate corrective actions and conducting timely follow-up. Works collaborative with all members of the clinical team to disseminate Joint Commission National Patient Safety goals to all employees and to facilitate assimilation into daily practice. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.)
