Payroll Accountant

Job Description
A large, well-established construction organization is seeking a Payroll Accountant to support accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing for a union-heavy workforce. This role is critical to maintaining employee trust, operational efficiency, and compliance across field and office teams. The ideal candidate is highly fluent in Excel and payroll systems, comfortable working in a fast-paced construction environment, and confident partnering with HR, field leadership, union representatives, and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Process weekly payroll for approximately 160 field employees and 85 office employees, with an increase to 180-200 during peak periods.
Administer union and non-union payroll, including hourly and salaried employees.
Maintain accurate pay rates, deductions, benefits, and union labor classifications.
Ensure compliance with union agreements, labor laws, and internal policies.
Prepare and support certified payroll reporting as required.
Work fluidly between Excel and Viewpoint (or similar payroll systems) to validate, reconcile, and troubleshoot payroll data.
Build, maintain, and enhance payroll-related spreadsheets and reporting tools.
Support payroll tax filings and benefit-related uploads as applicable.
Essential Skills
Advanced Excel proficiency with the ability to move quickly and accurately across systems.
Union payroll experience, preferably in construction.
High attention to detail with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
Ability to work independently while collaborating across multiple teams.
Strong communication skills and comfort working with field and union personnel.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with Viewpoint payroll system.
Certified payroll reporting experience.
Experience in the construction industry.
Manufacturing payroll experience with union exposure.
Experience in payroll tax and benefits reconciliation.
Work Environment
This role is primarily office-based, with collaboration across Finance, HR, and Field Operations. Regular interaction with the field workforce and union contacts is expected. The work environment is fast-paced and deadline-driven during payroll weeks, with a supportive, team-oriented atmosphere. The organization has a 'big company mindset' with top-down collaboration and accessibility. Employees work onsite Monday through Friday, with one day of work from home per week after six months.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $48000.00 - $75000.00/yr.
