What you'll do
The Director of Design & Construction will lead all design, planning, and construction for all Bassett Healthcare Network's facilities and infrastructure across its multi-site network. This critical leadership role will manage capital construction and renovation projects, ensuring they support patient-centered care, operational efficiency, and full regulatory compliance with New York State healthcare standards.
The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in healthcare facility project management, including experience with the NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH), Office of Mental Health (OMH), and Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) regulations, as applicable. Reports to the Vice President of Facilities.
Project Leadership & Execution
Direct the full lifecycle of capital projects-from feasibility and programming to design, permitting, construction, commissioning, and closeout
Ensure all projects are delivered on time, within scope and budget, and to the highest safety, quality, and functionality standards
Manage multiple projects across Bassett's regional network, including hospitals, outpatient centers, and administrative buildings
Design & Regulatory Coordination
Oversee and coordinate with architects, engineers, and consultants to align designs with clinical and operational needs
Ensure compliance with New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Facility Guidelines, FGI Guidelines, and NFPA life safety codes
Manage and oversee Certificate of Need (CON) plan submissions and regulatory approvals through the NYS Public Health and Health Planning Council (PHHPC) and local planning and building departments
Construction Oversight
Partner with contractors, construction managers, and trades to supervise site activities and ensure adherence to safety standards, ICRA, and project specifications
Conduct regular site inspections
Lead weekly construction progress meetings
Support change-order evaluation, claims mitigation, and schedule optimization
Financial & Risk Management
Develop detailed project budgets and track expenditures throughout the project lifecycle
Lead financial forecasting, develop cash flow statements, review value engineering opportunities, and drive cost control strategies
Identify, document, and manage project risks and ensure proactive mitigation strategies are in place
Stakeholder Engagement
Serve as the primary liaison between internal stakeholders (clinical leaders, administration, IT, facilities staff) and external vendors and agencies
Provide clear, concise project updates and regularly report to leadership and board-level committees, as requested
Sustainability & Resilience
Integrate environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and climate resilience strategies into project planning and design when appropriate
Ensure facilities meet modern healthcare delivery requirements and support long-term adaptability
What we need from you
Education:
2 Year/Associate Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or related field, required
Master's Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Business or related field, preferred
Experience:
Minimum 5 years experience in design and construction, required
Proven leadership in managing complex projects, preferrably in the healthcare field, required
Strong understanding of codes, standards, and construction methodologies, required (healthcare related, preferred)
Experience with government-funded or publicly bid projects, preferred
Ability to present and communicate with senior leadership teams, including board-level committees, required
Minimum 5 years healthcare experience, preferred
Licensure/Certifications:
Valid NYS Driver's license, required
PMP Certification or equivalent, preferred
LEED Certification or CHC (Certified Healthcare Constructor), preferred
Licensed Architect or Professional Engineer, preferred

Pay Range
Salary is based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and fair market evaluation based on industry standards. The above compensation range represents a good faith belief of the compensation range by Bassett Healthcare Network, and its entities and affiliates, at the time of this posting or advertisement.
Pay Range Minimum:
USD $152,896.15/Yr.
Pay Range Maximum:
USD $229,344.22/Yr.
