Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Disabilities Studies, Education or related field. Two (2) years of full-time experience working with young adults with disabilities in an educational or community setting. Experience with legal framework involving accommodations for students with disabilities and federal laws and regulations. Experience with diagnostic assessments including medical, psychological, and educational documentation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with determining reasonable accommodations based on knowledge of disability related barriers. Experience with establishing reasonable accommodations for experiential learning opportunities. Experience with clinical, crisis, and suicide risks assessments and interventions for students with a wide range of disabilities.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Accessibility Support Counselor is responsible for supporting a comprehensive university-wide effort to ensure that students with disabilities are supported through reasonable accommodations in both academic and professional rotations. This individual would be responsible for coordinating with both the student and academic programs to ensure an accessible environment. The selected candidate will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving. They will possess superior communication and engagement skills, having the ability to communicate and present information effectively and persuasively to various audiences. They will have demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
The incumbent plays a crucial role as a team member within Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services. In this capacity, they collaborate with other team members to collectively contribute to the overall functioning and effectiveness of the services provided. This involves actively participating in team meetings, sharing insights, and engaging in collaborative decision-making processes. The incumbent's role extends to fostering a cooperative and supportive atmosphere, ensuring seamless teamwork, and collectively working towards the common goals and objectives of Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services.
Aid in the coordination and provision of accommodation services for all students with disabilities to include review, evaluation, and interpretation of documentation and the creation of accommodation plans for registered students with physical, learning and psychological disabilities. Serve as a liaison for students and their families; meet with and assist regarding accommodations, academic performance, registration, and referrals/manage appropriate resources. Conduct intake interviews and evaluate student's eligibility for accommodation under the American with Disabilities Act by assessing the student's documentation of disability. Consult with students regarding reasonable accommodations, monitor their progress and follow-up as needed. Provide academic supportive counseling to students. Assist students in developing problem-solving approaches through which they can address their needs and concerns. Keep accurate, comprehensive, and up-to-date records related to the student.
Collaborate and create partnerships with various professional school programs to create reasonable accommodation plans for students in the classroom and in experiential learning experiences. Create innovative and engaging program opportunities for graduate students with disabilities. Engage in outreach and community education activities. Identify and assist in the development of new programs that meet the needs of students with disabilities and participate on various university committees. Serve as a liaison to faculty, administrators, and staff to address accommodation needs and raise awareness across campus in advocacy for student needs. Proactively communicate with faculty and instructors about their course design to understand how best to eliminate disability-related barriers. Create a collaborative relationship with other departments and make referrals to other resources when necessary.
Consult with other service providers, such as University Council, CAPS, Student Health Services and off campus treatment providers; consult and collaborate with other professionals at the university including residence hall staff and faculty; consult with students' parents as needed. Provide crisis intervention and support within a case management system. Interface with student crises and access resources on/off campus. Collaborate with accessibility stakeholders on committees to evaluate student accommodation requests and evaluate technical standards. Stay up to date on best practices and trends on ADA and disability-related issues and work in compliance with federal and state regulations on disabilities.
Professional Development and Committee Involvement: Participate in opportunities that promote your learning, growth, and development (i.e. classes, training, committee, webinar, etc.). Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas outside of your individual unit/department (i.e. campus wide traditions, events, programs, etc.). Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Evening and weekend work may be required at times.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
Salary : $67,000 $4,000 Location Pay = $71,000 Total Compensation
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
