The incumbent properly identified patients utilizing the full name and social security number before processing and/or hospital computer entry requests. Compares orders from multiple physicians and properly identifies STAT and routine testing labels to proper communicate with the medical technologist so testing can be performed according to STAT and routine protocol. Establishes proper identity of all patients, ensures accountability by properly reviewing specimen labeling with patient's name and social security before patient leave the collecting areas. The incumbent is responsible for receiving and preparing requests for testing and specimens into the clinical laboratory and evaluates the acceptability of each specimen, documents discrepancies, and resolves potential problems. Screen telephone calls and routes inquires to appropriate personnel. Ensures proper processing and accession of specimen; especially those requiring special handling, and clearly communicates requirements to the laboratory staff. Sorts specimens based on testing location, needs, and prioritize for turnaround time. Able to cope with quick deadlines and uses knowledge of processing procedures to identify and resolve specimen errors. Follows detailed instructions in operating the laboratory equipment, ie., centrifuge, barcode reader, and printers. Resolves and documents any preanalytical issues. This position follows standard precautions in the use of personal protection equipment and complies with other Health Care Center and Hampton Medical Center infection control requirements and the handling and disposal of biohazardous materials. Keeps the waiting area, phlebotomy work area, and storage area (organized and stocked supplies) clean. Rotate and remove expired supplies ad needed. Answers telephone in the designated areas, assist with collection questions and refer other question(s) to the medical technologists on duty. The incumbent participates in the daily huddles with other HCC staffs to determine the daily needs of the Health Care Center.
