Summary The Supervisor of Sterile Processing Service (SPS) is a direct report to the Assistant Chief of SPS of the Kansas City VA Medical Center, a Complexity1B facility. The Supervisor of SPS is responsible and accountable for supporting a high-quality focus when providing supervision to SPS staff. Responsibilities Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The duties of the Medical Supply Technician include, but are not limited to the following: Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates activities of day-to-day operations. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of sterile processing service focused on high level disinfection, sterilization, sterile storage, infection control and prevention, staff education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. Ensures even distribution and prioritization of workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations. Revises work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload. Assigns tasks as necessary to provide new employees with the experience and training required to perform decontamination of scopes and instrumentation in the work area. Monitors and reports on the status of work. Ensures SOPs and SPS mandates are followed during the performance of workflow. Reviews or spot checks reusable medical device (RMD) reprocessing work to ensure completed work meets supervisors' instructions (e.g., work sequences, procedures, methods, and deadlines). Assesses the quality and quantity of work by reviewing the cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of all RMD flowing through the department. Experience and/or Education Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related curses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: One year of experience equivalent. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate KSAs: 1. Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds. 2. Ability to direct staff and manage tasks to be completed. 3. Ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of RME. 4. Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues. Preferred Experience: At least 5 years of experience in Sterile Processing Services (SPS) required. Certification in SPS required (VA Level 2, or National Certification) or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
