A Glimpse of the Job
The Chief Electrical Officer's duties include leading the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all shipboard electrical, automation and control systems to ensure that they provide the functionality that is intended and ensuring they comply with USCG regulations and Class Rules. This role requires independent action and the ability to lead and mentor technical personnel in proper operation and maintenance procedures. A requirement of the position is the ability to utilize an IEC-based drawing and manual set effectively maintain, troubleshoot and repair equipment and systems aboard the vessel. They should be familiar with communication protocols utilized to interconnect equipment and systems.
Essential Duties/Tasks
Chief Electrical Officer
Maintains operational reliability for critical vessel automation and safety systems. This includes routine maintenance and troubleshooting for the following General Electric Power Conversion Systems: Power Management, Electric Propulsion, Propulsion Remote Control.
KTE HV Switchboard, LS Vacuum Circuit Breakers and Schneider Electric SEPAM 80 Relays. Kongsberg Ship Monitoring and Alarm Systems. WABTEC Engine Control System. Autronica fire detection system, and other automation, monitoring, control and safety systems.
Lead the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of automation, monitoring and control
systems aboard the vessel.
Lead the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of the High Voltage Electrical Plant
Participate in the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of electronic systems and
equipment installed aboard the vessel to the extent that is authorized by the equipment manufacturer, USCG regulation and Class Rule.
Compliance and Inspection
Prepare the above systems and equipment for periodic inspection by USCG and periodic survey by the American Bureau of Shipping
Training and Other
Support the training of licensing students to the extent that it does not interfere with the previously mentioned duties.

Required Education and Experience
The ideal candidate would have a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or any relevant combination of education and experience.
Five or more years of experience as an Electrical Officer or Electro Technical Officer.
Required Licenses and Certifications
U.S. Regular Passport
Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC)
Possession of or the ability to obtain a United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner with the following endorsement(s): Wiper.
Must meet one of the following requirements: License as an Electrical Officer from a flag state or an endorsement as Electro Technical Officer from the United States Coast Guard.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience on a vessel constructed with:

A sectionalized high voltage high power (12 MW and above) integrated electrical network supervised and controlled by a power management system

Electrical Propulsion, multi motor coupled to electrical network by variable frequency drives

Centralized monitoring, alarm and control systems

Other automation, monitoring, alarm and safety systems
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Skill in the use of electrical meters, electronic meters, test instruments, and electrical/electronic troubleshooting equipment.
Skill in the use of hand tools and electrical/electronic repair techniques.
Skill in the ability to read and effectively interpret IEC based technical manuals, blueprints, and electrical/electronic schematics.
Skills in computer, oral and written communication include demonstrated ability to use common Microsoft products and NSE or other maintenance management systems.
Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work.
Related teaching/ instructional experience instructing cadets or unlicensed personnel.

Physical Requirements
All seafarers must pass a comprehensive medical examination to get a medical certificate, which confirms their fitness for duty and is required by organizations like the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). Essential physical requirements include the strength and endurance to lift equipment weighing 50 lbs. or more, the ability to safely navigate a constantly moving vessel, and the mobility to climb multiple ladders and enter confined spaces. Overall, a mariner must be prepared to perform all job functions safely and effectively in a challenging and often isolated environment.

All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements
Must pass USCG/DOT drug test prior to employment and participate in the University's random drug testing plan for drugs and Alcohol required by TAMU System and University Rule (34.02.99 M1, 8.6.1)
Must be able to sail during all designated underway periods, including training crises aboard the training ship and present for shipyard periods or other periods ship is away from Galveston
