Summary This Recreation Aid will be located in the Recreation Therapy section of the Medicine Service Line at the VA Medical Center in Tomah, WI (a complexity level 3 facility). The primary purpose of this position is to provide a variety of free choice leisure activities based on Veteran's leisure needs, capabilities, and available facilities. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION Develops and conducts free choice programming for all facility-wide leisure activities for medical, long term and psychiatric, nursing home care, and alcohol/drug treatment Veterans. Instructs groups, as well as individual participants, regarding basic techniques and maneuvers, dependent upon observation of Veterans participating in diversional/leisure activities. Observes recreational activities to identify any adverse impact upon the participants. Schedules various indoor games, hobbies, and craft activities. Plans outdoor leisure activities, and orients participants on requirements for protective equipment and the rules and regulations appropriate to the leisure activities involved. Assists in carrying out the treatment plan developed by the recreation therapist for the Veteran regarding free choice and neighborhood activities. Independently works with volunteer groups and medical center staff to coordinate facility-wide annual recreation and special events. Provides ongoing group recreation programs and maintains attendance records at recreation activities, documenting activities as required by VA regulations, policies, and procedures. Orients, trains, and supervises volunteers, Compensated Work Therapy Veterans, students, summer temporary employees, and those assigned to work within the area. Assures safe operation and maintenance of recreation areas and maintains accurate, up-to-date equipment accountability. Performs other related duties as assigned. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. -AND- In addition to the English Language Proficiency in order to qualify at the GS-6 level, you must meet one of the following: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities. Teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities. Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service. Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities. Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children). Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop. Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility. Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. NOTE: Appropriate credit will be given for voluntary participation in community, social service, and similar activities. -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): Successfully completed Six months of graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required. Education or internship must be directly related to this position, such as courses related to recreation or physical education. -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience are also qualifying. Physical Requirements: The work requires moderately heavy physical exertion on an intermittent basis such as assisting a Veteran in transfer activities; i.e. wheelchair to transport vehicle. There are also regular periods of standing and walking throughout the medical center and at off-station sites. Additionally, at times the work requires lifting, moving, and carrying of moderately heavy items and equipment for set-up or use by Veterans during recreational activities.
