Job Description:
The Student Externship Program is designed for CSUEB BSN nursing students who are eager to gain hands-on experience while developing critical skills necessary for their future careers. You will have the unique chance to work alongside an experienced preceptor for 8 weeks, which will significantly advance your nursing skills and knowledge.
Through this immersive experience, you will gain valuable exposure to patient care, nursing processes, and interdisciplinary teamwork. Participating in this externship can serve as an excellent preparatory step toward entering a Nurse Residency Program.
In collaboration with CSUEB, this immersive program allows you to earn 1 unit of academic credit upon completion. Please note that externs will not be employed by John Muir Health during this program; instead, credit is awarded through CSUEB.

Education/Experience/Skills Requirements:
Education:
Currently enrolled in CSUEB BSN nursing program in good standing and completed semester 3 or semester 4
Certifications/Licensures
Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification - Required
Skills:
Dedication to working in the local community.
Desire to learn and develop skills in patient care and nursing practice.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Compensation:
Externs will be paid a $6500 stipend upon completion of the program
John Muir Health will pay the cost of tuition for N498 and all associated fees.
Program Duration:
The CSUEB Student Externship Program lasts for 8 weeks starting June 1, 2026 through July 24, 2026.
To be considered for the program, applicants must be available for the full eight-week duration.
Location: John Muir Health Walnut Creek and Concord Campus
Key Responsibilities:
As a CSUEB Student Extern, you will have the opportunity to:
· Assist nurses with patient care activities, including assessment, medication administration, and documentation.
· Observe and participate in clinical procedures under the supervision of registered nurses.
· Participate in patient education, offering support and information as directed by nursing staff.
· Enhance your understanding of patient-centered care, safety protocols, and evidence-based practices.
· Participate in program evaluation surveys and graduation ceremony
Learning and Development Opportunities:
· Hands-on experience in diverse nursing settings, including medical-surgical units, step-down, surgical services, labor and delivery, and critical care.
· Work alongside a preceptor who will help you explore a clinical placement that aligns with your passion.
· Opportunity to network with nursing staff and healthcare leaders for career guidance and advice.
· Regular feedback from nursing preceptors to support your growth.

Pay will be adjusted to the local market if hired outside of the Bay Area.
