Summary This position is located in the Clement J. Zablocki Medical Center, Milwaukee, a complexity level IA facility. The incumbent functions as a motor vehicle operator within the Facilities Management Division, Environmental Management Service. Responsibilities Major Duties: Loads processed/sterile instruments and other empty carts onto the vehicle and transports them. Operates a motor vehicle, a closed bed truck which typically has an approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 10,000 pounds. Performs operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, and cleaning and washing the vehicles. Use two-way radios to receive and transmit messages and complete trip tickets and other required records. Abides by all traffic and safety laws, exercises proper precaution in the operation of motor vehicles, and makes timely and efficient pickup or deliveries of cargo. Performs daily cleaning and sanitation of the truck and/or trailer using prescribed germicide according to pre-established procedures, thereby preventing contamination of sterile instrument items. Ensures that all infection control procedures are strictly observed in the handling and transporting of sterile instruments both clean and soiled to ensure that clean sterile instruments. remains uncontaminated and the soiled is properly contained. Maintains and submits a daily maintenance/inspection log, temperature and humidity log, and a daily route log. Follows sanitation techniques for maintaining an aseptically clean and aesthetically pleasing environment as well as for the protection and safety of patients, visitors, and staff. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The incumbent exerts light physical effort in the operation of hand and foot controls while in the vehicle. Moderate to heavy physical effort may be required in the frequent handling of objects up to 50 pounds to include loading and unloading carts of sterile instruments, usually by pushing, weighing up to 750 pounds. These carts are sometimes pushed or pulled up an incline or down a decline. The work is performed both indoors, in a vehicle, and outdoors. Incumbent is exposed to heat, cold, wet, slippery and/or icy conditions. Incumbent is exposed to a limited variety of traffic hazards and must continually be aware of patients and visitors while on VA grounds. While functioning as a housekeeper, the incumbent is subject to working in noisy, crowded conditions, in and around patients, staff and visitors. May be subjected to heat, humidity, various odors, cold or dampness, especially when working on or near docks and traveling between buildings. Employees are subjected to considerable noise, cuts, bruises, minor shocks and other injuries from working with powered machines. There may also be exposure to vibrations from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong chemical and cleaning solutions. Care is required to avoid serious injury when working on ladder stairs with platforms and rails, and when using mechanical and/or electrical equipment. The incumbent is required to utilize personal protective equipment, to include but not limited to gloves, masks, boots, protective clothing, hats or helmets, respirators and ear plugs.
