POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

Location: Newington, CT
This position is eligible to apply for telework after successful completion of the working test period, and thereafter, in accordance with the Telework Policy. Employees in their initial working test period must work on site in the office.
THE ROLE
The Accounting Careers Trainee will receive training in various accounting functions, which will vary depending on the assigned area and may include:
Using Core-CT financial modules for entry, reporting, and analysis;
Establishing federal grants in Core-CT and managing complex billing rates;
Reviewing grants, budgets, contracts, and related financial documents;
Reviewing expenditures and preparing recurring billings to federal agencies;
Ensuring accurate federal and state coding and funding availability;
Preparing and reviewing complex journal entries;
Reconciling expenditures, billings, and budgets for grant closeouts and final vouchers;
Performing related duties as assigned.
APPOINTMENT
The length of the development program is determined by the experience and training requirements of the designated class and the prior experience of the incumbent. At the completion of the development program incumbents must meet the experience and training requirements of the designated class. The program cannot be less than one (1) year and cannot exceed three (3) calendar years in accordance with C.G.S. 5-234. Incumbents in this class will be eligible for reclassification to the designated class without competitive examination upon successful completion of the development program and satisfactory service. All appointments to this class shall be under terms of a development program and in accordance with a time schedule approved by the Commissioner of Administrative Services. All development programs must be approved by the Department of Administrative Services prior to appointment to this class.

SCHEDULE OF SALARIES FOR ACCOUNTING CAREERS TRAINEE
Minimum Requirements Hiring Rate Completion of 1 Year of Training
Bachelor's degree with at least 15 semester hours
in accounting and/or qualifying experience Step 3: $58,311/year Step 5: $62,233/year
Bachelor's degree with at least 30 semester hours in accounting Step 5: $62,233/year Step 7: $66,170/year
Master's degree in a related field with at least
15 semester hours in accounting Step 5: $62,233/year Step 7: $66,170/year

The salary for an employee who completes any of the above minimum requirements after initial appointment to the Accounting Careers Trainee job class will be adjusted commensurate with the schedule above and effective the pay period following the date the degree has been conferred or the pay period following the date the appropriate number of credits as indicated above have been earned.
For current state employees compensation will be in accordance with guidelines for computing salary adjustments set forth by the Department of Administrative Services, Determining Salary Upon Change in Class Manual.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional accounting or auditing position.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Receives training in introductory accounting or auditing work for development of skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement into a professional agency accounting or auditing position;
Performs a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during the course of the training period;
Examines financial records of governmental or private businesses and accounting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with statutes, regulations, guidelines or accepted accounting principles;
May receive training in such areas as maintaining financial records and accounts, establishing financial statements and schedules, and preparing budget estimates;
