The paralegal is a member of the organizations Legal Department providing legal services, support, and advocacy to all victims of crime. The successful candidate will possess knowledge of and interest in the dynamics of sexual assault and domestic violence. The paralegal provides advocacy and support to domestic violence, sexual assault, and other crime victims. The paralegal will assist attorneys and support staff with the Legal representation in family court, which includes orders of protection, custody/visitation, child/spousal support, paternity, guardianships, and other legal issues affecting victims and their rights. The paralegal will also assist the attorney(s) in the preparation of immigration applications, such as U & T-Nonimmigrant visas, VAWA, Battered-Spouse Waivers, as well as other litigation as we explore expansion of the legal services available to crime victims.

Responsibilities:

The range of legal services provided for sexual assault, domestic violence and other victims of violent crime runs the spectrum from general information regarding the legal process, referrals, assistance, advocacy, and court accompaniment, to administrative and secretarial duties.

Works with the attorneys, paralegals, pro bono volunteers, student interns, and other Agency employees. Manages intakes and referrals for clients. Assists the Legal Director in scheduling appointments. Maintains court and attorney calendars. Coordinates intern and volunteer schedules. Scans all client correspondence, accordingly, distributes mail and saves files into agency database. Provide legal advocacy to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in family and immigration matters. Assist the Legal Director in managing agency legal programs, reporting, and staff. Attend legal trainings, staff meetings, and other internal/external meetings, as required. Maintain communication with other stakeholders in the family, immigration criminal court systems, including but not limited to opposing counsel, attorney for the children, judges, judicial law clerks, county attorney, district attorney, legal aide, probation, parole, and other federal and state law enforcement, supervisory and judicial staff. Community outreach, as required. Assist in the organization and planning of new training programs. Ability to perform creative legal research and advocacy. Arranges, coordinates and schedules monthly Legal Question and Answer / KYR programs. Commitment to collaborative multi-cultural work; and the ability to collaborate well with people in diverse settings. Provide accurate and timely statistical data for grant reports. Serve as an interpreter and/or translate documents as needed. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Skills and Abilities:

Administrative skills Demonstrated knowledge of the operation of the court system. Assertive, self-motivated and sound judgment skills

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree, paralegal certification, or relevant experience required. 1-2 years of prior relevant legal experience in family and immigration law preferred. Bilingual Spanish/English preferred but not required. Understanding of domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault, crime victimization, trauma, knowledge of victims rights and remedies, and cultural sensitivity and diversity is required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent administrative, legal research, writing, analytical skills, organizational, planning and time management skills. Ability to work independently, cooperatively and under pressure. Must have a valid drivers license, have use of car. Experience:

Paralegal certificate Notary license NYS Driver's license HOURS, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Full-Time, Must work a minimum of 40 hours per week 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (may need to flex time to accommodate program needs). Remoting is not permitted. Benefits: ICHRA, 403b match, generous paid vacation, personal and sick days.
