GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Help protect Wyoming's incredible wildlife and natural landscapes.This position provides technical expertise and coordination for the Habitat Protection Program (HPP), working to safeguard critical wildlife habitats across the state. The role reviews proposed development projects on federal, state, local, and private lands to evaluate potential impacts to wildlife and develops recommendations that help balance responsible development with conservation.
Serving as a key liaison for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, this position collaborates with agencies, industry partners, consultants, and the public. Responsibilities include technical analysis, policy coordination, geospatial mapping, database management, and preparing comment letters that help guide decisions affecting Wyoming's fish, wildlife, and habitats. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.
Review proposed development activities and assess impacts to terrestrial and aquatic wildlife habitat throughout Wyoming.
Develop recommendations to avoid, minimize, or mitigate impacts to wildlife resources.
Coordinate with WGFD field personnel to develop science-based recommendations and project responses.
Analyze technical and scientific information to inform project design, monitoring, and mitigation strategies.
Collaborate with federal agencies, state agencies, industry representatives, and other stakeholders to resolve conflicts related to development impacts.
Track and evaluate the effectiveness of wildlife protection recommendations and update strategies as needed.
Serve as the Habitat Protection Program point of contact for project review, assignments, and coordination.
Develop GIS maps and manage geospatial data to support project analysis and decision-making.
Maintain and manage databases, records, and project documentation.
Track project deadlines and maintain records of completed project reviews.
Prepare technical reports, correspondence, and project response letters for internal and external audiences.
Evaluate federal, state, and local laws, plans, policies, and rules to determine potential impacts to wildlife habitats.
Assist with the development of statewide policy recommendations related to land use, energy development, and transmission infrastructure.
Coordinate internal and external meetings and facilitate communication among stakeholders.
Qualifications
PREFERENCES:
Experience working with terrestrial or aquatic wildlife habitat management, land use planning, or environmental analysis.
Experience reviewing development projects or environmental impact analyses.
Experience using Esri® Arc Pro Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for spatial analysis and mapping.
Experience working with federal and state land management agencies.
Experience coordinating multi-agency or multi-stakeholder projects.
Experience interpreting environmental policies, regulations, or land use plans.
KNOWLEDGE:
Terrestrial or aquatic wildlife and habitat management principles.
Environmental assessment and environmental impact analysis.
Federal, state, and local land use planning policies and regulatory processes.
Wyoming's natural resources, land uses, and economic framework.
Scientific research design and data analysis.
GIS applications and geospatial data management.
Database management and data tracking systems.
Technical writing and report preparation.
Conflict resolution and stakeholder collaboration.
Project management, organization, and time management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Wildlife Management)
Experience:
1-2 years progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Wildlife Biologist II
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Education & Experience Substitution:
4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Wildlife Biologist II

Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position primarily works in an office environment but may occasionally require field visits, meetings, or travel related to project coordination and stakeholder engagement.
Work involves extended periods of computer use, data analysis, and technical report preparation.
The position may require coordinating multiple projects simultaneously and meeting strict deadlines while interacting with a variety of agencies, organizations, and stakeholders.
NOTES:
FLSA: Exempt
A bachelor's degree in wildlife science, wildlife management, natural resources, environmental science, or a closely related field is typically required.
A valid driver's license is required.
This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities but may provide work direction to program staff.
The position requires strong writing and oral communication, attention to detail, collaboration, and problem-solving skills when working with multiple agencies and stakeholders.
Occasional travel within the state may be required.
