Summary As a member of the Facility Maintenance Unit, the incumbent is responsible to perform a wide range of duties in maintenance and repair at the Atlanta VAMC Fort McPherson Campus The maintenance mechanic must have basic and general knowledge in at least two the following trades, (one of which must be general maintenance): carpenter, painter, and plumber. Responsibilities Major duties and responsibilities will include: Performing maintenance and repair of architectural, mechanical, and electrical components of buildings; Installing, modifying, and repairing furniture items, doors, windows, floor coverings, baseboards, and signage; Installing, modifying, and repairing plumbing and electrical systems; Conducting inspections and performing routine maintenance on area of responsibility assigned; Constructing/framing metal stud dry wall partitions and drywalling, mudding, taping, and plastering; Patching and painting various surfaces; Performing snow removal using vehicles for snow plowing, snow blowers, and shoveling; Keeping storage areas clean, orderly, and organized to maintain an accurate inventory of supplies, tools, and materials. Planning and measuring various materials according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions; Reading and interpreting work orders, instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes; Using and maintaining equipment and tools common to various trades; Performing preventative maintenance on shop tools and equipment to ensure safe and proper function; Working with wood or wood substitute materials, gypsum board or fiber-cement board, concrete/rebar, glass, etc.; Installing laminate and protective coverings on various surfaces; Laying concrete block brick and performing minor masonry repairs; Performing related duties as required. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The duties of this position require considerable movement around the hospital and involve bending, lifting, crawling through restrictive areas, and working from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms both in- and outside buildings. The Maintenance Mechanic must frequently lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing 50 pounds or more with proper equipment. Assignments may require standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The Maintenance Mechanic works in all areas throughout the medical center. Inside areas may be dirty, dusty, and greasy and contain bad odors. The Maintenance Mechanic is: subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds; exposed to moderately high noise levels; exposed to dust, fumes, and dirt; exposed to possible strains, cuts, electrical shock, bruises, burns, and infections; occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Outside duties are performed in all @types of weather. The use of protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, gloves, clothing, and safety equipment is required as needed.
