POSITION SUMMARY:
Has overall responsibility for all facets of weld quality, welder expertise, and performance. This includes screening, qualifying, assessing, and training welders; supervising the weld inspection/test team; and supporting the Quality Assurance Manager in the development, administration, and enforcement of weld standards, best practices, and established welding procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Screens, qualifies, assesses, and trains welders per established procedures.
Collaborates with Production Management to determine and provide welders with desired skill sets relative to the work which they will be assigned.
Performs scheduled recurring welder skill assessments as the basis for categorizing welder skill levels, prioritizing training, and determining opportunities for improvement for each individual welder.
Collaborates with management in blending and validating welder assessment results between the management's assessments and those performed by the Welding Supervisor.
Maintains hard copy and electronic records of welder skill assessments.
Provides feedback to Production Management for performance appraisals regarding welder performance, trainability, and adherence to established processes and procedures.
Collaborates with Quality Assurance to identify trends in weld inspection data (defect rates) that will guide additional training to supplement training identified by the welder assessment process.
Supervises the weld inspection and test team.
Collaborates with Quality Assurance to develop changes to existing weld procedures, procedure qualifications, and welder qualifications (WPS, PQR, and WPQs).
Enforces adherence to weld standards, best practices, and established welding procedures.
Responsible for researching and implementing advancements in welding technology, equipment, and materials that promote enhanced quality, increased efficiency, and reduced consumables costs.
Responsible for researching and implementing advancements in welding technology, equipment, and materials to promote improvements to safety, ergonomics, and fatigue reduction.
JOB SCOPE:
This is a critical position to the success of the operations team. The Welding Supervisor is responsible for facilitating enhancements to all aspects of welding including quality, efficiency, safety, and human factors. This position operates with minimal guidance and supervision from the Quality Assurance Manager while maintaining a high level of collaboration with Production Management and within the manufacturing team. This position is often involved in development and/or decisions regarding manufacturing planning and execution.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
This position has direct supervisory responsibilities for the weld inspection and test team. The Welding Supervisor title is intended to imply authority and expertise relative to all aspects of welding and support processes including process, training, equipment, and technology. It does not imply direct supervisory responsibility for welders assigned to the Production Team.
INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
This position maintains a variety of professional relationships and must be able to determine the appropriate level of communication and interaction for various situations. The ability to effectively influence decisions through respectful interactions with others both within the operations team and outside of the team is essential in this role. The highly collaborative nature of this role requires a high frequency of daily interaction with production in which the candidate must be mindful of disruption to production activities. Candidate must have a relentless desire and ability to follow through and persist in developing the capability of our welding program.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Strong command of and working knowledge of: Aluminum welding/AWS D1.2 Structural Welding Code - Aluminum, welding processes and qualifications, welding technology/equipment, human factors, and training methods.
Ability to:
Solve tough technical, welding problems and drive solutions to completion.
Develop credibility as resident welding expert with Production welding team.
Identify and implement new technology and equipment.
Achieve and maintain AWS Certified Weld Inspector certification.
Comfortably and patiently train new employees and veteran welders alike.
Embrace a technical leadership role.
Develop good rapport with the Production welding team with focus on interpersonal interaction.
Develop process/systems approach to all responsibilities.
Maintain organized records related to training and welder skill assessments.
Reasonably apply acceptance criteria throughout weld inspection program.
Handle the pressure of constant interruptions.
Ability to schedule, direct and organize work within a diverse department and coordinate work with other departments to maintain efficiency.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Proven track record in a technical leadership role with demonstrated expertise in aluminum welding, welding processes, and procedures.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:
Ability to achieve and maintain AWS CWI certification required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is conducted in a dynamic, fast-paced boat building environment with moderate to loud noise levels from production activity. Will be required to be in production areas in shops and the yard. Must be able to walk to and from job sites. May be required to work more than 8-hour shifts and weekend work. May be required to lift up to 50 pounds. Local travel and out-of-town travel (including air travel) up to 5% of the time with notice.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While in production areas will be exposed to all weather conditions, noise, dusts and odors.
