What You Will Do
Engineering Services (ES) Division applies capabilities to enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. Within ES, the Science and Technology Operations (STO) Engineering Group is a multi-disciplinary organization consisting of collaborative Design and System Engineering Teams. Collectively, these teams enable the STO Facility Operations Directorate (FOD) mission across nearly three million square feet of mixed-use office, laboratory, research, and production space.
This position will be filled at either the Engineer Technologist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Engineering Technologist 3 ($106,400 - $176,000)
The successful Engineer Technologist 3 applies principles of engineering, mathematics, and science to solve technical problems. Responsibilities include facility design, operation, maintenance, and project execution. Candidates must work independently and collaboratively to deliver efficient, accurate, and high-quality results. Safety and security are a primary responsibility; employees must ensure compliance, maintain training, and stop work if continuing is unsafe or compromises security.
The technologist will plan detailed phases of engineering work, resolve design issues, and develop effective solutions. They will coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and contractors. The role includes leading and mentoring staff and ensuring adherence to established engineering policies and Laboratory standards.
Engineering Technologist 4 ($117,200 - $195,400)
In addition to the responsibilities outlined for Level 3, the technologist at this higher level will deliver integrated, full-system design solutions through mentorship and technical leadership. They will support and lead engineering initiatives that demand innovation, independence, and expert judgment. The Technologist 4 will independently plan and execute detailed phases of engineering work, leading efforts that address complex or unique technical challenges requiring advanced insight. The incumbent initiates and reviews work for self and others, provides technical oversight, and coordinates multidisciplinary engineering efforts with clients, suppliers, contractors, and internal partners.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Combined experience related to the engineering, calculations, and design of facility electrical system, structures and components such as switchgear, switchboards, MCCs, motor starters / VFDs, Small UPS, panelboards, feeders, branch circuits, and short circuit analysis
Experience in system and equipment installation and maintenance in accordance with National Codes and Standards such as IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NEC, and NFPA
Knowledge and understanding of electrical engineering principles, design guides and relevant standards
Knowledge of engineering work planning, design change control and coordination. Knowledge of basic project engineering practices
Excellent verbal and written communication
Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 4:
Expert knowledge related to the design, installation, and maintenance of facility electrical system, structures and components.
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement interdisciplinary design solutions to complex facility and equipment installations
Demonstrated ability to mentor junior personnel
Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 3: Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 4: Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to electrical design implementation
Experience with SKM Powertools Software or similar electrical system analysis software
Proficiency with emerging analytical, modeling, or simulation software beyond standard CAD and industrial control tools
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Incentive Compensation Program: Position at the higher level is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
