The Highway Helper responds to incidents such as crashes, stalls, debris and medical situations, on the metropolitan freeway system. The position performs initial emergency traffic control, assesses the incident and determines the appropriate action. The position will diagnose and fix minor mechanical problems on site (e.g., tire change, gasoline, jump start, etc.) and provide first responder level medical services as needed.

In addition, this position supports MnDOT's Congestion Management, Incident Management, and Traveler Information programs by helping clear incidents in a safe and timely manner to prevent secondary crashes and reduce congestion, and providing information about traffic delays for dissemination.

The Highway Helper will work on an assigned route within the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area, but may be assigned other duties in addition to being responsible for the opening and closing of the HOV gates as needed.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of full-time work experience responding to freeway incidents and performing minor auto repair OR performing automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair (e.g., tow-truck operator, automotive or heavy equipment mechanic, freeway incident responder).

A related post-secondary degree such as automotive mechanics, automotive technology, or medium/heavy equipment repair or technology may substitute for 6 months of experience.

A valid Class D Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in Incident Management or related fields such as fire and rescue response, State Patrol, or other public service entities with frequent freeway response.

First-aid and/or CPR certified.
