Summary As the Industrial Hygiene Officer (IHO) and Alternate Radiation Protection Officer, you will be responsible for the management of Kennedy Space Center's Industrial Hygiene Program and activities. You will manage a wide range of chemical and physical hazards associated with spacecraft and payload processing and launch operations, and oversee industrial hygiene services. Responsibilities Serves as the Industrial Hygiene Officer (IHO). Maintains oversight of Federal regulatory and Agency-level requirements, develops, implements, and maintains Center-level Industrial Hygiene programs to ensure compliance and provide a safe workplace. Coordinates development, selection, and oversight of Government-provided industrial hygiene services. As a consultant to the Office of Procurement, ensures industrial hygiene policy requirements are captured in contractor Performance Work Statements. Supports ground processing and launch/landing contingencies with propellants. Reviews facilities and systems for hazardous chemical and physical agents. Supports Radiation Protection Program activities. Oversees industrial hygiene investigations and assessments of workplace health hazards. Advises on industrial health hazards and approaches to their control, control measures, and design features to minimize or eliminate exposure to health hazards. Supports Safety and Mission Assurance with safety inspections, payload processing and launch operations, Voluntary Protection Program support, construction safety, and other safety and health matters requiring industrial hygiene participation. Coordinates with Engineering on the management of safety and health hazards in the laboratories, shops, and test facilities. Reviews mitigations/controls of commercial providers which introduce hazards that extend beyond the partner footprint. Integrates with Center employers to communicate hazards and potential impacts. Coordinates Center-level implementation of Toxic Substance and Control Act (TSCA) Section 6 requirements for exempted uses. Develops Workplace Chemical Protection Program and controls to include review of exposure monitoring using updated limits. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level: Serving as a subject matter expert applying concepts, principles, and practices of industrial hygiene to resolve unusual problems and develop approaches for mitigation; Performing launch/landing, ground processing, and/or payload processing involving chemical or physical hazards such as hypergolic propellants (i.e., spacecraft engine propellant); and Conducting risk assessments and identifying options to reduce residual risk. Education Basic Requirements: You must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. OR Have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree that included a major in engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. OR Certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (formerly American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH)). U.S. degrees must have been awarded from colleges or universities that are accredited by recognized accrediting organizations.
