The Executive Pathways Program is a paid summer internship (June - August) for college students to explore a rewarding career in public service.

This position is eligible for telework (https://mn.gov/mmb-stat/policies/1422-telework.pdf) for applicants who reside in Minnesota or in a bordering state, with supervisory approval and satisfactory performance. If you live in a state bordering Minnesota, you must live within 50 miles or less from the primary work location to be eligible for telework.
The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is a newer division within the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS). This internship offers students the chance to support important work that helps leadership understand how the organization is performing and how resources are being used. The Budget Analysis Intern will work with the Enterprise Finance team, which manages budgets for all OIG divisions. In this role, the intern will help identify key financial information and assist in turning that data into easy-to-read metrics and dashboards. These tools help leaders see budget trends, track progress, and identify potential risks. This internship is a great opportunity for students interested in public service, finance, data, or operations. Interns will gain hands-on experience, learn how financial data supports decision-making, and contribute to projects that have a real impact on the organization's future.
Some responsibilities include but not limited to:
Assist with identifying and defining key financial and performance metrics used to support leadership decision-making
Support the Enterprise Finance team in reviewing budget data across OIG divisions
Help organize, clean, and analyze financial data to identify trends, risks, and areas for improvement
Contribute to the development of dashboards, charts, and visual tools that clearly communicate budget performance
Document metric definitions, data sources, and reporting processes
Collaborate with staff to understand business needs and translate them into measurable indicators
Prepare summaries, reports, or presentations to share findings with internal stakeholders
Participate in meetings and provide administrative or project support as needed
Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for an internship, you must meet the following requirements:
You must be a student at an accredited educational institution; or recently graduated December 2025 or May 2026
AND
Excellent human relation and communication skills sufficient to represent the position and Division in a professional, efficient, and clear manner
Ability to work independently and in a team setting
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and contribute to a culture of inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred majors include: Finance or finance-related
Knowledge of finance best practices
Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills
Critical thinking
Additional Requirements
Must be in academic years of sophomore, junior, or senior (Graduate students allowed)
Must provide unofficial transcript to show proof of school enrollment
Must be willing to reside in Minnesota for the duration of internship
Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) criminal background check will be conducted on all finalists for this position. Finalists must pass the DHS background check.
