NOTE: This position requires extensive travel during the field season, including overnight stays for up to three nights per week from May through November.
This position exists to carry out construction, development, and maintenance work on aquatic habitat enhancement and restoration projects that are carried out through the fisheries habitat program and fisheries management activities of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and assist other Divisions and Sections of the DNR when schedules permit. The Fisheries Habitat Crew area of responsibility encompasses the entire State of Minnesota, including Aquatic Management Areas, stream easements, Fishing Access Corridors, other Fisheries and Department managed lands, 4,500 managed lakes and 16,000 miles of fishable rivers and streams.
Minimum Qualifications
Position requires a Class A license, passing a pre-employment drug screen and participation in the DNR ongoing random screening program. Employees who are required to retain this license will be included in the DNR Drug and Alcohol Plan. This will require the employee to be pre-employment drug tested and be included in a random drug and alcohol testing program.
Knowledge of equipment, machinery and materials needed perform aquatic habitat management work, including stream habitat enhancement and restoration techniques.
Knowledge of methods, tools and equipment used in general mechanical maintenance and construction work.
Ability to safely use power and hand tools and other equipment/tools as assigned.
Ability to safely operate and maintain medium & heavy motorized equipment, e.g. dump trucks, tractors with trailers, full circle excavator, front-end loader, crawler-dozer, ASV, skid steer, auger, plus power and hand tools, including chain saws, air compressors, carpentry tools, and other equipment/tools as assigned.
Ability to safely load and operate trucks and trailers carrying maximum loads.
Ability to service, perform minor repairs and make adjustments to machinery and heavy equipment, including general maintenance and repair of buildings.
Ability to understand and follow verbal directions sufficient to interpret, communicate and carry out verbal assignments, safely and efficiently.
Ability to work with limited supervision.
Ability to complete job duties during all four seasons and in adverse weather and environmental conditions.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and verbally to staff, visitors, partners, and the general public consistently conducting oneself in a cooperative and courteous manner.
Ability to obtain a Construction Installer certification from the Erosion and Stormwater Certification Program.
Preferred Qualifications
Two years of experience in heavy equipment operation and maintenance, site design and construction, and landscape/vegetation management or related skilled trades.
Currently possesses a Construction Installer certification from the Erosion and Stormwater Certification Program.
Experience in equipment maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
Knowledge of general construction methods.
Considerable experience with the proper loading, securement, and transport of cargo and heavy equipment.
Considerable knowledge of the goals, objectives, policies and procedures for Fisheries programs.
Technical school certificates, licensure or degrees in one or more of the following: construction management, heavy equipment operation, welding, small engine repair/automotive, or diesel/heavy equipment repair.
First aid/CPR certification.
Additional Requirements
This position requires current possession of a valid Class A license or the ability to obtain one in the first 6 months of employment. The selected applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen and will be included in the ongoing DNR random drug and alcohol test program.
