Summary You will serve as an INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/GEOPHYSICIST/OCEANOGRAPHER in the HYDROGRAPHIC DEPARTMENT (NP4) of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS. Responsibilities You will serve as a Subject Matter Expert in the fields of hydrography and bathymetry, supporting data collection, data processing, quality control, product generation and/or product dissemination. You will collaborate with other technical experts to refine processes. You will keep abreast of developments and improvements in hardware, software and techniques used to evaluate hydrographic and bathymetric data. You will prepare publishable scientific reports whenever findings are of significant interest to the Navy or scientific community. You will direct team members and ensure that data are being properly collected, compiled, analyzed, evaluated, refined, archived and staged. You will use scientific knowledge and expertise to solve a wide array of issues that may arise. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-12: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying theories, principles and techniques of physics, geology, geodesy, oceanography, bathymetry and hydrography for the collection and processing of bathymetric and hydrographic data. Experience utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) technology performing geophysical data processing; test systems modifications. Experience initiating standard operating procedures and providing documentation to surveyors and data processors. Experience evaluating and validating hydrographic, bathymetric, oceanographic and geophysical data and preparing significant publishable scientific reports. GS-11 In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience with hydrographic and bathymetric data collection and dissemination is required. Experience with hydrographic and bathymetric software, as well as the ability to evaluate bathymetric/hydrographic data for use in NP4 procedures and products, is essential. Experience with performing quality assurance for bathymetric/hydrographic products, along with associated hardware/software systems, including documentation and configuration management, is necessary. Experience adapting analytical skills to execute projects directed toward solving problems. Oceanography Series,1360 Basic Requirements: Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences. or Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Applicants who qualify on the basis of major study in biology or geology must have had at least 6 semester hours in the major directly concerned with marine science or 6 semester hours in oceanography; applicants who qualify on the basis of other physical sciences or engineering must have had differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours in physics.
