Plans and schedules application maintenance, upgrades, and associated service overhead for selected third-party enterprise applications
Completes service requests and the resolution of incidents associated with selected third-party enterprise applications
Implements and administers application security to meet RIT security standards for assigned applications
Participates in the evaluation and selection process for enterprise applications, including developing technical requirements and providing application assessments
Adheres to architectural and operational standards for selected third-party enterprise applications
Works collaboratively to identify, communicate, and remediate risks and information security vulnerabilities

University Advancement's IT team at Rochester Institute of Technology is excited to add a dedicated Applications Engineer to our growing team. This role is well suited for an IT professional with 1-5 years of Azure experience and 3-5 years of broader IT operations experience who enjoys working in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. To support strong teamwork and partnership, this position requires an on-campus presence; candidates must reside in Western New York or be willing to relocate.
The Applications Engineer will provide operational leadership to deliver a reliable application eco-system through automation, monitoring, integration, and problem resolution. Our environment includes Azure, Salesforce, and on-premises components utilizing leading-edge and legacy technologies. An ideal candidate would be a strong technician with broad experience who can easily move from technology to technology to be the glue that binds everything together.
Additionally, this position provides primary support for University Advancement's Azure subscriptions within the RIT tenant, including responsibility for Azure Data Services, Azure Integration Services, and SQL Server. The overall goal of the role is to ensure a robust, reliable, and well-integrated application ecosystem across technologies, enabling the organization to effectively support its mission in service of the university.
Major Responsibilities:
Design, deploy, and manage an Observability Framework that proactively identifies problems and improves system reliability by providing operational visibility across University Advancement's Azure, Salesforce, and on-premises eco-system.
Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reliability of application operations through automation, monitoring, and integration. Introduce tools and techniques to aid in maintaining and improving existing Azure, Salesforce, and on-premises eco-systems.
Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues using strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Provision, monitor, support and maintain Azure services included within the University Advancement Technical Roadmap. This includes, but is not limited to, contributing to the design and building of Azure Integration Services and Azure Data Services (Azure Data Factory, Fabric).
Collaborate closely with other IT organizations across the university to prevent/resolve issues and to contribute towards the overall technical direction of the University.
Provide occasional after-hours support to resolve issues identified by the Observability Framework and in support of business needs.
This position requires regular on-campus presence in Rochester, NY to support collaboration with colleagues and campus partners, with possible flexible work arrangements available.
Specialized Skills:
Approach problems in a logical, organized, and informed manner to identify information needed to solve a problem effectively. Recognize trends, think of several possible explanations or alternatives for a situation, and anticipate potential obstacles to develop contingency plans to overcome them. Develop solutions, evaluate progress, and revise approach as necessary.
Strong knowledge of Azure that includes experience provisioning, monitoring, and using Azure Integration Services and Azure Data Services (Azure Data Factory, Fabric, and Synapse).
Ability to develop a holistic view of a diverse technical eco-system with an understanding of how individual technologies work together in support of the business mission.
Strong written and verbal communication skills to collaborate with business and technical stakeholders to solve real-world problems.
Experience with application performance tuning, application optimization, and knowledge of industry best practices.
Possess technical flexibility to be comfortable working across the entire RIT technical stack, including Salesforce, Azure, Microsoft Power Platform, Windows, MySQL, Python, and other potential future technologies.
