This includes, but is not limited to, the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate, urethra, and male reproductive organs. The Urologist will participate in Urology call as appropriate, supervise residents, and contribute to the development of an educational program. The Staff Urologist must be eligible for and maintain a Faculty Appointment with Washington University, the established Academic Affiliate Partner of the VA St. Louis Health Care System. Fellowship training in Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery (GURS) and/or extensive experience with male reconstructive procedures (urethroplasty, IPP placement, AUS placement, ureteral reconstruction, urinary diversion) is desired. Key Responsibilities The Staff Urologist will deliver comprehensive urologic care, including both surgical and non-surgical management of conditions affecting the genitourinary system in male and female patients. Duties include: Outpatient Care: Evaluate, diagnose, and treat Veterans with benign and malignant urologic conditions. Coordinate clinic flow and ensure timely follow-up in collaboration with Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), nurses, and technicians. Inpatient Care: Serve as attending for hospitalized patients, providing consultations and managing post-operative care. Operative Care: Perform a full range of urologic surgical procedures, including endoscopic, laparoscopic, robotic, and open surgeries. Emergency Care & On-Call Duties: Respond promptly to urgent consults and participate equitably in the call schedule. Community Care Coordination: Collaborate with Care in the Community staff to facilitate external referrals and integrate outside findings into VA care. Team-Based Care and Leadership The Urologist will lead a multidisciplinary team, ensuring collaboration and accountability among APPs, nurses, surgical technicians, and allied health staff. Responsibilities include mentorship, clinical guidance, and participation in interdisciplinary care teams, tumor boards, and specialty conferences. Teaching and Education The position requires active involvement in teaching and supervising residents, APPs, and nursing staff. The Urologist will provide structured learning experiences and conduct in-service training for OR personnel. Administrative and Professional Duties The incumbent will participate in Surgical Service meetings, peer review, and quality improvement initiatives. Additional duties include credentialing oversight, workflow optimization, and timely documentation in the Electronic Health Record. Research and Scholarly Activity Opportunities exist for participation in research related to urologic outcomes, surgical innovation, and health systems improvement. Collaboration with APPs and nursing staff on scholarly projects is encouraged. Work Schedule: Full-Time, Tour to be negotiated between service chief and provider. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
