Responsibilities As a Legal Assistant (Office Automation) in the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), District of Hawaii, you will provide a wide variety of technical assistance services related to complex financial litigation actions and matters. Typical work assignments will include: Provide a variety of legal assistance and office support services to Attorneys; Examine, prepare and process a variety of technical legal documents which are characteristically voluminous and complex in format; Review incoming material and determine the need for assembly and preparation of a variety of legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels; Provide assistance to attorneys in trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instruction, and compiling witness and exhibit lists; Assemble exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents from file material; Produce a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-8: To be qualified at the GS-8 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in federal service. Specialized experience is defined as providing trial support to attorneys by preparing complaints, motions, subpoenas, orders, or other hearing and/or trial documents accurately and in proper format; verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents; assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists; and using software applications and legal and non-legal databases to produce legal related reports and documents, conduct factual research, develop tables of contents and indices to briefs, and prepare courtroom presentations; conducting skip tracing activity when necessary to locate debtors, using own discretion in determining those techniques and any follow up needed to locate the debtor; and communicates with debtors to present options for debt payments, answer questions, explain pertinent procedures, clarify information and work cases to resolution.
